Vinyl Records to Cd's

I have a computer phobic friend (aged North of late 60's) who has an extensive record collection.

His family have bought him a 'puter which to his credit, he is begining to get the hang of using.

He wishes to convert his record collection to CD and is looking for one of those USB record players to plug into his 'puter.

Many of these records are no longer available and have never been issued on CD so just buying CD's isn't an option.

Although this subject has come up once or twice before, does anyone have any opinions on anything on the market at the moment. Ideally I'm looking for something one touch but I dare say that might not be possible.

Recommendations on what to purchase or avoid appreciated.

I got one of these from Maplin's recently and it's excellent - easy to use and produces good quality recordings

If he's got a turntable with mic out (or even speaker out) he could plug it into the mic in on the computer and hit record

"mic in",, I'm having a problem witrh this...Trying to do the same re converting my vinyl collection to MP3. Installed Roxio software on my laptop tonight

Tried with the jack plug in the Mic in socket but it's only showing that its recording on one channel. You need, according to my lad, to connect it to the line in socket for the soundcard....which I haven't bloody got on my laptop Is this right?

Anyone else out there that has done it on a laptop ?..err, converted vinyl to MP3 I mean, before anyone gets funny....

Your friend probably already has a decent turntable and will get best results using something like this

to convert the analogue signal to a digital USB stream. I use an ART pre-amp with my laptop and get excellent results transferring from vinyl. It's quite time consuming tho'

i'd say converting them into another, soon to be extinct, format may not be such a great idea

vinyl to mp3 and use a different player would be much easier if there's any quantity involved.

I`m sure some one will correct me if I`m wrong but looking though amazon at a selection of recordings (random) they all appeared to be available in vinyl, About £22 per record, so is vinyl making a come back, Is it time to dust off my Systemdek, put a new stylis on the Linn Basik and enjoy sweatness of vinyl instead of cd harshness ?

The trouble is that MP3 is crap. Too much information is "lost".
CD is also not as good as vinyl played through a good system and its easy to compare one album in the 2 formats and hear the difference.

Vinyl to CD is the best compromise, impo.
The only plus with MP3 is the amount of tracks you can fit on a CD... and the reason is...

"Means to an end" and it's all relative too.

Unable to use a CD player on the bike, no room, and changing CD's would be a pain... Quality of vinyl still does it for me at home, but on the bike an ipod gives me enough "quality" to keep me happy. CD quality cf vinyl is shite for me...

i realise mp3 is not the epitome of hi-fi, but the OP did not seem to require that. my suggestion, just seemed simple.

personally i would never go back to vinyl. looks nice, but not convinced by the superior sound arguments.
