I don't know what has happened.

Vista Premuim operating on a HP laptop. Have Norton 360 running

Last night turn computer on. Everything loads. Upload photos and then try to go onto the internet via Internet Explorer (newest one....don't know name)

Norton starts pinging away.....invalid TCP, blocking google / ukgser - an so it goes on.

It blocks my SSI point (public within an apartment complex) etc etc.

I call a friend and ask some advice.......he tells me to uninstall Norton as it sounds like it has thrown a wheel. I do so.

Run windows Defender side by side with Norton, so run scan and try to Windows update....still nothing - Cannot access any internet site.

Seems like Vista is stopping me getting onto the internet, but it seems like it needs an update to get it working again.

can anyone help as I am lost. Now at work and will ask a techy here, but the computer is in German and he is Turkish!

THanks in advance.

Get rid of Norton - that's a good start. :thumb2

Install AVG free anti virus, and see how your machine performs, then if okay - forget about Norton (hugely resource-hungry, on top of Vista - itself a huge drain) and get something like AVG internet security (all in one anti-virus, firewall etc)

okay

AVG now installed from my computer geeks at work. AVG scanned and nothing found, however it needs updating....cannot connect to internet to do this.

They have checked ip address, release and renewed.

I have left it with them for "an hour" but there is a lot of scratching of heads here.....the computer runs fine, works on all other applications, but will not connect to the internet.

Any ideas from the collective.?

I'm assuming that you have removed all of Norton, and don't have it and AVG "fighting each other" :nenau

But - you probably need to run Spybot or similar - much better at identifying malware if that is the cause.

yes all removed and now updated by the IT department.

They have had to direct to the actually IP address rather than letting the computer connect automatically. A good solution for this one place, but he told me that the computer has lost the ability to connect automatically to the internet with the wireless router.

Any comments?

AVG is fully updated and scan currently happening. Will load spybot and run it this afternoon.

Another thought

Is it possible that I have not fully uninstalled Norton and it is blocking the IP address?

How do I make sure that the Norton is not running......basic please I am a computer idiot if it hasn't already shown.

Thanks:o

Press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" and select "Start Task Manager"

Click on the "Processes" tab and scan all the running processes (Arrange alphabetically and look for anything "Norton-ish")

As a short-term fix, if there are any - highlight that process and click the "End Process" button at bottom right of the pane.

If only static IP works, like you describe you could:

1. Have stopped one of the services required for DHCP. For instance the DHCP client service. This must be running. Check in control panel, "admin tools", "services".

2. Have a renegade firewall piece of crap thing running that blocks responses from the DHCP server. Make sure that Norton 360 is cleanly removed, it's garbage. I know people who work for Symantec that know better than running Symantec/Norton 360 firewalls on their own computers.
