my bike wont start!

im a new biker, one month of riding. i love my gs but it will not start.

i bought, charged and fitted a new battery but that didn't work.

the lights work and so does my horn (fnar), so unless im wrong, im guessing starter motor?

is this a job thats easy?

where is it on my bike?

hi all and i hope to chat more about the joys of gsing when the beauty growls to life once more!

big jon aka immaguddun

its in neutral, with the battery fresh on it went "whuu", but it didn't sound like it was gunna turn

i have put it in 2nd and rocked it to see if i could move it round in case it had stopped in a "bad spot"

Hi big jon, welcome to UKGSer.

I'm just going to shift this over to the 650 section where I think you'll get a better response. This bits mainly for newbies introducing themselves. :)

Hope you get yourself sorted soon.

Duchess :)

Jon

If you need a hand PM me and i will see if i can get over to have a look at it with you.

i have checked kill switch and made sure both stands are up, i will buy the hains manual anyway, does anyone own/recomend it?

abrasion, that is damn decent of you! i wont have too much time these next few weeks, just the odd half hour here and there to work on it. im sure if i find the starter motor, get it cleaned out it will be sorted. cheers! as a new member i look forward to gsing the midlands!

I really doubt its the starter motor. Do you have an alarm fitted? If so check that the leads that go to the battery are connected. Same as with all other accessories.
First off start simple :Recheck that you have the battery polarity correct. The lights are not polarised and iirc the horn does not have a relay. Hopefully this is not the case as you will undoubtedly fried the ECU.

If you battery were dead you would hear a clicking sound that which is the starter relay. This cuts the power to all circuits except the parking light when the ignition button is pressed. If the battery is as full as you say then you should hear one click only. Also, some immobilisers cut the starter relay so if you have one fitted make sure the connections are ok. Another sound to listen for is the petrol pump coming on when you press the clutch lever in or move the gears into neutral.

Oh and while you're at it check the clutch lever switch

Spray the ignition switch with WD-40 as well for good measure.

Another thing to try before you start changing the starter motor is to try bump starting it. Find a steepish hill, roll down and stick it into 2nd then dump the clutch and be ready to declutch once its running. If it starts you have a duff starter if not then comment back on your findings so our collective intelligence may help.

Unfortunately there isnt a clymer or haines manual out but the next better thing is the official maintenance manual linked above.

or try using a screwdriver on the starter solenoid (located near battery it has a live and earth terminal connected to loom and battery) by touching both terminals causing a spark, this bypasses your starter switch, worth a try

There are a few relays on your bike which are a POS and can cause baffling problems like you have now.

Substitution is the easiest way of checking them , but some are hard to get at down the front of the battery box.

I think they are leftovers from a dud lot some of the early K bikes were inflicted with , so a decent BMW mechanic will know which ones they are and where to find them.
