Im confused .com.
Most laptops/netbooks come with a years guarantee.
John Lewis give two years guarantee.
Some places want nearly 160 squid for product warranty.
Pc world/Currys want up 7.99 a month.

Software cant really go wrong so your only really paying for warranty on the hardrive etc

What have/did you lot done/do

Thanks in anticipation

Who for?

Depends who I'm buying for. My experience over the last 20 years is that if it is going to go wrong, it will go wrong in the first 3-6 months. So for me, I take the basic warranty (whatever that may be).

For my daughter going to University at the other end of the country - different matter. I bought her laptop from PC World and took out their 5-year warranty (including annual health check). Didn't work out too bad, bought the whole bundle (laptop, Office, rucksack, anti-virus, etc) so managed to negotiate a good deal. AND the time, effort and money that has saved me over the last 5 years has been phenomenal! :clap Don't know what she did with the laptop, but she must have been to PC World at least once a month - and they happily fixed her hardware - and software - problems each time.

So, horses for courses I'd say.:type

i got 3 yrs HP pick up and collect on my hp laptop 2 yrs and 10 mths ago.

since then the mic stopped working, the speakers crackled, a key popped off and broke and the power brick has failed.

All been replaced no messing - plus numerous phone calls for questions and answers :thumb2

they've also sent me a spare power brick and a replacement motherboard by accident :nenau

worth the $50 i paid for i the warranty

2.5 years ago I bought an Acer laptop from laptopsdirect.co.uk for my lad, as he was just about to start his A levels. The lad gives all his possessions a hard time as he has Tourette's (NO HE DOES NOT FECKING SWEAR ALL THE TIME LIKE HIS DAD). Motor tics & OCD mean things get bashed at times.

So, I took out Acer's 3 year Accidental Damage & Extended Warranty package. This cost about a third of the price of the laptop, something like £150 including a carry case & mouse.

This has proved a worthwhile investment. The laptop is currently being repaired for the 6th time (3 screens, 1 keyboard, 1 hard disk and 1 power brick). Everything has been physical damage, apart from maybe the hard disk, although I suspect it might have succumbed to excessive physical abuse.

Never a quibble from Acer. Immediate issue of a returns authority followed by collection by DHL. Usually returned within a few days.

The screen went on a mates HP laptop not long after the first year and it cost nearly 400 squid to replace. The laptop was only 600 :eek
The kids (Dell-inspiron) very old and very slow hand- me- down laptop from Grandad has never played up (apart from operator error :augie)
Its for my teenagers so i dont keep getting kicked of my desktop for homework and msn
With the desktop if something goes wrong you can just take it out and put a new one in, drives - boards etc.

If you're bothered, get a credit card that offers extended warranty for nowt. Job done.

I signed up for the PCWorld CoverPlan, when I bought a cheap Advent laptop.

I thought is was a bit much at £9.00 a month ( = £108 a year ); but forgot to cancel it.

In the past 2 years, outside the orginal guraantee period, I have had
1 new Hard Disk
1 new screen
1 new motherboard
Machine stripped and checked for a loose screw, causing occasional shutdowns.
1 new CD-DVD drive

Considering that on each occasion I have been able to drop off andpcik up in my local PCWorld, and had the option for courier collection/return, it has not been so bad.

I have jad to argeu with them on occasion that I feel it is reasonable for an owner to upgrade memory, and the hard disk without returning to PCWorld. I keep the old components now in case I do have any more problems and have to return it.

Wit th rapid pace of developments in hardware, you are looking at whatever you buy being close to obsolete after 2 years, so build quality is probably not aimed at a long life span, especially at the power priced end of the market. At some time I expect to die permanently, at which point my Cover Plan will cough up some dosh towards a replacement ...Not much I know, but every little helps.
