Was Dr. ABS Brake right??? on Brake Servo's not being fitted to BMW bikes anymore

Personally I like the way the servo brakes work - compared with my old ABS non servo 1150GS - but each to their own; I don't like their complication and potential problems but I'm not paranoid about it. I find the residual braking adequate (though obviously I have not been in a "surprise" situation).

even the thought of brake failure rules it out in a potential buyers mind

Any brakes can fail. How about a split brake line? - at least one has been reported on this board.

If servo brakes were so good R1's and Fireblades would have 'em, They don't.
I would think weight would also be a consideration for those bikes however good servos are.

The reason those of us without servo brakes can be so smug is we have'nt got 'em, no one with half a brain will buy a servo equipped bike now that BMW have withdrawn it, the risk is too great, even the thought of brake failure rules it out in a potential buyers mind, time will tell.

Your wrong....

#1 BMW aint withdrawn it, as posted by nemesis, its still on every model bar the S. Im guessing they will phase it out over many years one model at a time.
#2 99.9999999% of BMW buyers probably dont even know about the servo issues. What % dont use a online forum like this? What % has had a problem and the dealer told them isolated incident?
#3 Currently if you want ABS you gotta have servo. Thats a PITA, but doesn't stop people buying it from a 'safety' aspect.

Agreed. If a Goldwing doesnt need them neither does a GS. If I had my purchase again (04Adv+Servo) I would have to seriously consider whether to have the ABS option, but only because of what I've read on this forum (and thats the flaw in your argument).

I just went over to the International BMW Motorrad site to look at the specs for the R1200S, and this is what I found:

Brake front

EVO brake system with dual disc, floating brake discs, 320 mm diameter, four-piston fixed caliper

So it's still the EVO brakes, with the servos I reckon. The brake description is the same as the 1200 GS.

I agree with Mike,

For me, riding everyday in lots of traffic, 15k a year, at speed and in crap variable conditions with diesel on many of the roudabouts and fast downhill duel carriageways ending at roundabouts, I really wanted ABS. I have had it on my last 3 bikes ( 2 BMW) and it has saved me from an accident on at least 5 occassions, I have done about 20k without any issues to date.

I  and :mmmm over the decision after reading these items on the forum but it came down to the number of times I have been thankfull for it.

If I had a choice, I would do without the complexity of a servo, but there is no such animal with ABS (A 1150GSA).

I'm sure all of the servo systems on aircraft could be subject to similar possible maladies..yet we still fly?

I keep fancying an orange thing :o but I do luv me GSA :D

Call me greedy, but I own a 2002 ABS non servo 1150 and a 2005 ABS servo model.

Yes I have had a brake failure.........on the 1150 at about 5500m....luckily without an accident.

Which is best?

You pays your money ....................etc

The Integrated Brakes are :censor::censor::censor::censor:ed up, sorry. There is no need for this crap.

Read the full desc for the new BMW R1200GS ABS here:

PDF

At this time I don't know the manufacturer of this ABS, but I bet it's coming from Bosch-Brembo, same lightwight as on the 990 Adv from KTM and similar to the ABS on the Ducati ST4 and BMW F650GS. Superb!!! You will get the new Conti Brakes (Integrated) in autumn 2006, visit INTERMOT Cologne. They will be fitted on the new models in spring 2007. Stoppie protection and so on.

Servos that fail are crap. ABS that fails is crap. And paying 1.050 Euros for an unreliable safety system is just stupid you won't believe. No harm meant.

The only difference is that you can switch the ABS off. Same as you can with the GS. It's still the EVO brakes.

EDIT I just read the specs, and take it back, the specs say no servos.

Evo brakes refer to the brake caliper (Tokico, not Brembo - I think) fitted to BMW bikes since late 2001 and has nothing to do with whether the bike had servo assisted brakes or normal non servo hydraulic brakes.

My 2005 1150GSA (non ABS, non Servo assistance) has EVO Brake calipers

My servo + ABS equipped 1200 has Brembo calipers, so I think Johnny may have it backwards and therefore EVO = Brembo and non EVO = Tokico ... ?

Perhaps.

But my ABS, non-servo, non-EVO 2001 1150 has Brembo calipers. And where do the "BMW"-branded calipers fit in the equation?
