Water in bevel drive oil

2001 1150gs 44000 miles

For the second year running, oil drained from my bevel drive is very milky. Quick test with a blow lamp under a bit alloy plate confirms its definitely water. Haven't ridden off road, or through fords etc, just the usual monsoon like British summer. No oil leaks anywhere, so a bit baffled as to how the water is getting in there.

Pulled crown bearing seal a couple of years ago to check bearing, no water before then so maybe seal not quite cock on, have made a seal tool to set it square since then but looking for advice before fitting new seal.

There's a mist around the gaiter to the swing arm, pulled it back for a look but no water inside, I'm at a loss...any ideas?

Sounds like condensation, but not sure at all, cannot believe it is coming in from the seal though

Check the breather on top of the bevel box. Pull the black cap off, there should be a piece of foam underneath.

Don't think it's condensation as it didn't happen before on this bike or on my old 11GS, both garaged in the same place over winter. Can't be certain though.

I'll pop the breather cap off for a look later today.

I made an extended breather for my 1150 which runs along the paralever finishing under the seat, this avoids any ingress with multiple river crossings but it's often a mystery as to how water gets in there through normal use so has to be through the breather hole.

Bike's got a hugger that was hard up against the breather, think the water may have been tracking down the arm of it and overwhelming the vent.

I've filed the hugger arm to give it a good clearance, if that doesn't help I'll go with Tim's suggestion of running a hose on it.

As has been pointed out, can't really see the water getting in anyhow else

I don't use a pressure washer on it.

Mate has a 1200 gs and had same problem with hugger pushing against the breather
