Talking to someone the other day who has just ordered one to replace a jap 1000cc.

Got me thinking.....hmmm....if i stop doing the big miles with a pillion....cheaper than a GS, better looking, plenty of spec inc quickshifter and cruise/heated grips if you want. Dynamic suspension too.

I wont be changing anytime soon but has anyone tried one and if so how was it compared to the GS?

I was sorely tempted by the S1000R because it's an awesome bike for the money, but I found it near impossible to ride the bike at legal speeds. It's the biggest grin inducer ever. With the small screen I found wind protection pretty good too. I ordered a GSA in the end though, at significantly greater cost, because the new engine is more than quick enough and I wanted the additional practicality. I might be tempted to add a s/h S1000R to the stable in a few years though...

I have had an LC since last July and K1300R's before that and I did a 150 mile test ride on a S1000R, I was very impressed with it but as Max said quite differcult to ride it at legal speeds as it is great at going fast. The cruise control was very useful to keep to speed limits and it sounds fantastic IMO! I couldn't have one as I usually ride 2-up and need my main bike for touring as well as fun! The HP4 derived suspension is great and the small screen was as good as the one on my K1300 so 80-100 cruising should be ok for a distance. I think if I didn't tour or need to take a pillion I would be tempted!

My mate has just brought one and added a few additional extras, screen/comfort seat/Ventura rack, etc were off on a 3k tour end of this month so it will be good to see how it copes with touring .

Tis bonkers fast tho .

I'm deliberately NOT wanting to test ride one, as I know I'll love it!:D But, may need to release some money at some point soon, so would consider selling the HP2 and getting one (but still keep the GS;)).

Tried it and loved it. Engine is a peach, quickshifter a hoot and you just want to play with it. Very sophisticated.

But for similar reasons as others have noted, and the same reason I got rid of an '08 Blade, it's just makes going silly fast too easy. To get anything back from it yu have to up the ante just a bit too high on the road. Will end up with more points or worse.

For what it's worth, the Triumph Street Triple R gives me the same kind of kicks, albeit more in a teenage kinda way. If you're after cheap thrills it is a very accomplished bike and worth a test ride. The pre facelift versions are dirt cheap and tad more frisky than than the current model which some seem to prefer. Can even tour up to a week on it. If you're after kicks it's really worth a try. You have nothing to lube but your chains :).

I had the S1000RR before arriving at the GSW, it was ridiculously quick and frankly far too much for the road.

I've had 3 x test rides on the S1R and the Dealer has 'nearly' tempted me on each occasion, is a fantastic bike, superb handling but still blisteringly swift (despite de-tuning....).

Great machine, excellent value for money.

If the proposed S1000F Adventure is anything like as good but with a degree of day-to-day practicality, it'll be a Multistrada killer.

I've already put my name down for one, expected late this year or early next.

oh dear.....

I shouldn't have, but I did. I had a test ride on an S1000RR last week............and now my spangly new HP4 Carbon is on it's way!! :bounce1 (Sshhh - don't tell the missus) :D;)
The good news is the GSA is staying, I am enjoying it so much that I couldn't bear to part with it. Bring on the Looney Tunes machine :thumb

If I had another bike in the garage it would be a Street Triple, superb value for money fun.....my GS is in for a service next week, I hope my loan bike is a S1000!

I had a test on one of these whilst my gs was in for service. Amazing bike. Miles more power everywhere than my 2010 blade. Traction control and modes were incredible. Co u 'd easily tour on this bike.

I do think that this bike is pretty irresponsible of bmw to make though. The wheelie control is so good a novice could wheelie it with confidence. The problem will be when they switch it off.

Test ride booked for this Saturday, while the HP2 is in for its service.:blast:D
