Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
Don't know if anyone can help me here....

I have been using web-mania for about ten years and have been very happy with them up till the last two weeks.
I bought and hosted www.motomunster.com with them a year ago. My renewal came through and I just paid for the dot com part of it and not the hosting. I then hosted elsewhere and asked web-mania to point the dns info to the new host...

This has been going on for two weeks and they are virtually impossible to get hold of, and when you do, they can't help.

Thing is a couple of years ago I did the very same thing with a clients web site and they changed the DNS immediately no problems.

They use another site to buy their dot coms and I can't get hold of them either...

So if you do a whois you can see my name everywhere, but I seem to have no control....

Help please, if anyone can that is:thumb

Presumably you know the dns is still pointing to web-mania.

If they wont change your DNS then the only thing I can think of is for you to change your registrar. This in itself might be difficult as it is much easier with the original registrars help but it can be done without them assuming you can prove you own the domain. Since it is a .com you would be better going to someone like godady or you could even transfer it to DynDns. Both of them will give you full control of where you point DNS without them hosting any sites. No idea how you can go about forcing web-mania to point it to where you want. It should take them seconds to do so they obviously don't want to for some reason.

They have done it before for me. I reckon something is up at web-mania at the moment.

you might be right or it could be a change of policy or something. Either way the "we cant help you" isnt any good to you so unless you can change their minds (get them to get their finger out) you need to move your registrar or change domain name.

Anybody else got any ideas, please

I've not had to deal with an obnoxious domain service provider for years, but as you're dealing with a .com then there is the option for you to move it to another domain service provider.

You need to:

1) find a domain (dns) service provider who will be happy to host your domain record - there are multiple out there, easydns.com is one of the big ones (unfortunately they are not free), there are free ones - I use gratisdns.dk (yes it's Danish, but they are free).

2) relocate your domain from your current provider to your new provider - you need to do a redelegation

3) you probably also need to change how you pay for your domain - you need to read up on how the new provider wants to arrange that

Domains are in general owned by the person who did the initial registration, which means that if someone else is the official owner, then you're in for some fun, as you then need to contact internic and/or versign (http://www.verisigninc.com/en_US/pr...n-name-services/registry-services/index.xhtml) as there will be some paper work involved to change the owner.

But don't start sweating yet, find a free dns provider, or use your web hosting provider and do the redelegation - this is fairly easy, and normally only takes 24 hours.

Richie, according to WHOIS, your domain registration has expired so it looks as if web-mania aren't even attending to the basics. It might be sensible to try and get them to at least renew the registration so you don't lose it...if they don't even do that, I'd try and move to a new registrar ASAP. I have used 123, GoDaddy, eHostpros and Zen. They have all been O.K. but last time I transferred a domain away from GoDaddy, they weren't very helpful at all. Do you have any access to a control panel at all? I was wondering whether you could set up a domain redirect whilst the DNS servers are sorted out (assuming web-mania allow this..they don't have to).

Can you not just change the nameserver entries at the company that hosts the site to point to the company that hosts the site?

That is what he is trying to do.

Yes registration expired 29/12/10 although it does still have your name on it. Looks like the first thing you need to do now is get them to renew your registration before someone nicks it. Are you sure this company isnt going under?

My thoughts exactly....agree...focus on getting them to renew the name initially. At the risk of offending, can you definitely not set DNS or define a forwarding URL through the Control Panel (assuming you have access)?

The suggestions above from Marki, Casper are good ones...basically switch the name registration to another ISP even if you lose the few quid which you have recently paid to Webmania.

In the meantime, it may still be worthwhile trying to get Webmania to renew the domain registration. Use Fax, Email, phone, whatever...all on their website. I realise you may have done so before with no success but try it not mentioning the DNS thing, just get them to renew the name so you don't lose it. Did you go through a Reseller? Try them, too...that may be where the problem is.

You don't say whether you have access to control panel to change DNS, redirect URL yourself.

ok from that list of complaints it looks like web-mania are going under. Go to nominet and pay for a forced change and move it to someone else of your choosing. Do this sooner rather than later or you run the risk of loosing the domain. If you paid by credit card then claim the money back. You really need to do this and I dont think you have any choice in the matter now. If someone else buys your domain you have no chance of getting it back, receipt or not.

OK it has been updated and is paid up till the end of the year. I rang my new host company and they told me to contact onlinenic to ask them to unlock the domain and send me the authorization code...

I have emailed them and am waiting...

Need to sort this as I have a few dot coms through web-mania....

Thanks for the help; apparantly onlinenic are not the same company as web mania, however there help system seems to be as bad.

I will force the move if necessary, with the help mentioned above:thumb

what a royal PITA

These things happen, if the domain have been paid, then even if OnlineNic does not release the domain, there are ways to move the domain anyway. As long as you're the owner, and the contact email address on the domain soa record is correct then a delegation is fairly easy.

Read this: http://www.icann.org/en/transfers/dnholder-faq-03nov04.htm

How do I transfer my domain name to a new registrar?

If you wish to move your domain name from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another, you may initiate the transfer process by contacting the registrar to which you wish to transfer the name. This registrar is required to confirm your intent to transfer your domain name using the Initial Authorization for Registrar Transfer form. If you do not respond or return the form to the registrar, your transfer request will not be processed.

Your current registrar may also choose to verify your intent to transfer using the Confirmation of Registrar Transfer Request form.
-- snip --

There is nothing OnlineNic can do to stop you moving the domain.

Onlinenic have contacted me already, they say that they have asked web-mania to do the deed, but if they don't they will be happy for me to get back to them again. Fast reply and polite.:thumb

So as of today the dot com has been unlocked and I am in the process of transferring it, I will cross my fingers and if it works will gradually do all my other do coms too:thumb

Seems to be, cost me 15eur to transfer the dot com. I have about six more, maybe I will leave them with onlinenic and get them to change the dns info....

At the same time if I transfer as they are running out that price includes a years registration.

But I reckon for me web-mania has to be the end....
