Weekend dash

Hi all

I’m thinking of doing a long weekend dash across the channel.
Over to Calais on the Friday, then a bit of France into Belgium then into Germany, then back again.

Has anybody got any suggestions as to route (good roads)
Places to stay, I know we haven’t got a lot of time, but we don’t want to sit on motorway all the way.

We would be leaving on a Friday noon (Gloucestershire) and need to get back some point on the Monday.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks

Funny this thread should pop up just now. Wapping sent me this route about a year ago but I never got around to doing the trip. However, I am planning on going for three days next weekend. Just got a new Ducati & wanted some nice roads to ride on.

Some completely unexpected (and un-needed, I imagine) route advice, if you're crossing from Dover/Channel Tunnel. As a Gloucester-born myself, I must have made the trip between there and Folkestone a thousand times!

A417/A419 to M4 near Swindon, then turn off on A34 to Newbury, cross to Basingstoke, M3, M25, M26, M20. The Star Inn on the A339 near Kingsclere is the preferred lunch stop! At a steady pace, 3hrs42 minutes, Maybe 3hrs40 if you filter well at the M3/M25 junction. I once did it in less then three hours (Kawasaki GPz550). Don't be tempted by the A329(M) Reading/Bracknell route thrown up by route planners.

(Also, family tradition requires taking Birlip Hill rather than up to the Air Balloon.)
