West coast north of Ullapool - any tips.

I'm taking the family on a camping/fishing/walking break for the half term holiday this month.

I've lived / worked in Edinburgh, Dunbartonshire and Thurso but I never managed to get up into the far north west. We've got about 7 days actually in the area.
Any 'must see' special advice chaps. (Travelling in the 4x4).

I've only had a fleeting visit twice myself so others that know the area will no doubt be of more help. What I would say is take plenty midgie repellent wi' you :thumb2
 
I have been there many times, its my favorite part of Scotland.

Got to Inverness once with fuel light on GS.

decided that it would make it the 50 odd miles (shows how your mind is affected by riding 500 miles in a day)

ran out half way but got some lawnmower ful of a local.

I like to take a trip out to the islands if weather is good, sometimes the sea is solid with jelly fish.

North Western tourist trail is a good trip - Ullapool to Thurso.

Get up early and see Red deer

Make sure you have a windproof tent! It get's a bit blowey up there in those open hills.
 
My top tip is stop lots to take in the scenery. Watching it while driving is not conducive to a good trip.:augie

Other than that, just hug the coast as much as you can. The smaller roads are some of the best for scenery and getting away from it all.

The boat trips out to see the marine life and coastal cliffs are well worth considering too.
 
You gotta visit the Hydroponicum at Achiltibuie and to satisfy the inner family, the Pie Shop at Lochinver.

Take plenty of Skin-So-Soft to keep the biting buggers at bay.
 
Where to start? It doesn't matter where you go, the views are stunning and there's plenty of opportunities for fishing.

If you get as far up as Scourie, you can buy a fishing permit for trout for very little money. it gives you access to literally hundreds of lochs in North Sutherland that would make excellent territory for a combined camping/walking/fishing exped for a couple of days.

if you have any Navy connections at all, do not miss the Hood Stones above the west coast of Loch Eriboll. Known to the RN at the time as Lock 'Orrible.

Use your imagination when there, and envisage the Loch replete with U boats, ordered to report there at the end of WW2.

The stones are far above the Loch side and easier to miss than see. The tea shop on the West Coast of the Loch can tell you where to look.

Seconded........excellent trout fishing in the hills.
I'd recommend taking Achiltibuie road 10 miles north of Ullapool and explore all those minor roads on the map that are nearest to the coast e.g Achiltibuie to Lochinver via Inverkirkaig, Lochinver to Kylesku (detour to Stoer)-some great beaches up there as well.
