West coast road trip Advise

SWMBO and I did it and the Burr Trail in an F350 with a camper and I'm told that we might well be doing it on the trip I'm making with Earache from Indianapolis to Colorada and Utah at the beginning of next month when I'll be riding his ST1100 Pan European.....

YER not serious about riding yon mucky road on a pan whit if it rains ?

It's unlikely to rain just along the road from Monument Valley in early September. The owner of the Pan, that man wi' the sair lugs, twa posts aboon..^^^ will be on his R1150 GS. The Mokee Dugway is his idea....

Jeeze, its only a bit of gravel.
The driveways to our big houses down here in England are way worse.

Does make me laugh the way there's pristine tarmac on the way leading to it then rather narrow gravel all the way up the cliff face.

Thanks will read report latter, sound fantastic bit apprehensive to begin with due to going on me own and pretty poor planning skills but can,t wait to get there now . I have rented a GS 1200 as i have a 1150 at home will i be converted . will try and do a daily report but more likely ride all day drink a beer or two but will do my best. Richard

Just keep a diary and make notes when you take photos. You can write it up at leisure when you get back. Re-reading my thread has brought back loads of memories, and the wife said we can do another one some time

Direct line has just sent my travel insurance docs stating they will not cover bikes over 125cc . this is after 3 phone calls stating they would and charging for the increased risk Thanks Direct line. Can any body advice were I can find travel insurance including gs 1200 rental bike for 31 days. Thanks.

Try Horizons Unlimited, also you may find an American based insurer a little more willing.

Interesting thread, but I may need to start my own - just cashed in the BA airmiles and booked premium economy flights for SWMBO and myself to LAX Out 29th May and returning 14th June

Could do most of that in 16 days - but skip Route 66; complete waste of time.

Did the 101 and 1 from Seattle to Frisco in June. The 1 is now open all the way, and in places is worst than any gravel rd. The last bit of H1 where it meets the 101 is FANTASTIC and as good as the Dragons Tail.
If you start in Frisco, watch out.
(PS Eagle Rider have a depot in SF)
The turn off for H1 is just over the Golden Gate bridge and with current road works can be missed. (Little signs out there). H1 is great all the way. Look out for ZEN motorcycles in Point Arena for bike service. Not many hotels after P-Arena where the 2 in town are not brill. Lots of municipal camp sites that have no facilities but usually the odd massive RV.
I stayed in motels from £45 a night to nice hotels $130, and found the cheap ones as good as the dear ones, if a bit dated.
Coffee is bad everywhere, and motel tea... NO, Coffee, two bags and powdered milk. (TAKE BOTH). The giant red woods area....brill'
