Did the 101 and 1 from Seattle to Frisco in June. The 1 is now open all the way, and in places is worst than any gravel rd. The last bit of H1 where it meets the 101 is FANTASTIC and as good as the Dragons Tail.
If you start in Frisco, watch out.

The turn off for H1 is just over the Golden Gate bridge and with current road works can be missed. (Little signs out there). H1 is great all the way. Look out for ZEN motorcycles in Point Arena for bike service. Not many hotels after P-Arena where the 2 in town are not brill. Lots of municipal camp sites that have no facilities but usually the odd massive RV.
I stayed in motels from £45 a night to nice hotels $130, and found the cheap ones as good as the dear ones, if a bit dated.
Coffee is bad everywhere, and motel tea... NO, Coffee, two bags and powdered milk. (TAKE BOTH). The giant red woods area....brill'
