Mine's gone tits up and it's only two years old :(
i thought they were meant to last at least 5 years
could there be a reason why mine a laptop one btw failed :nenau

Assuming no manufacturing faults - it's usually heat that does them in

i think porn files have a built in setting to them that causes magnetic surface degradation.
Too many will cause premature failure.

:D

Its a mechanical device and so has a limited service life, the better ones will last 5 years.

You do keep it backed up of course so it will be easy to replace the drive and rebuild the OS.

Go to the website of the manufacturer. When mine went in just under 2 yrs the shop tried to fob me off with "a 1yr warranty sir" reply.

But a check of the manufacturers website showed they are warranteed for 5yrs.

Called manufacturer who said return it to seller and they'll return it to them (as they don't sell direct to public)

Called shop, got same reply, pointed out my "contract" was with them. Then followed up by a personal visit to busy shop with knackered drive and copies of warranty info :D

Even better, they didn't make that size anymore, so they had to give me a bigger drive.

I love it when they can't be bothered to deal with people after selling you something and you get one over on them :D

Bloody Hell! :thumb Thats good just checked mine and it does have a 5 year warranty. Would never have thought of that. :clap

just a note: the 5 year warranties usually only apply to boxed retail drives. cheapskates (like me) who buy vastly cheaper OEM units often only get a one year warranty.

samsung are/used to be an exception that gave 3 years on OEM.
