i appear to have a nice covering of a greeny/yellow oil over the top of the rear arm and suspension. there is no oil in the gearbox recess ( that i can see ) and nothing leaking around the wheel hub - it just seems strange for oil to be on the top of the rear drive so my fantastic powers of deduction lead me to think is it the rear suspension leaking?? if so how much oil is there as it seems to be everywhere!!!!
cheers

The colour probably depends on the manufacturer. In the oil cooled GS the gearbox and final drive use hypoid gear oil with a very distinctive smell. Suspension seems like a good guess but the shock won't hold much, probably only about 100mls. If you've lost much of it you'll soon feel the difference in lost damping on bumpy roads.

Doesn't take much oil to make a mess, chances are its your rear shock, and yes shock oil is usually that colour.

Cock! the shocks off and yeah is fooked, how much is a shock rebuild? used ones are £150 and probably same age as the one im taking off, the gucci wilbers/ohlins are way out of my price range, so what are my options ( other than a 20" piece of 2x2 in place of the shock! :D

Is it the GS or the adventure? I don't know if the standard GS rear shock is rebuildable? For certain the adventure shock is.

Sent mine to MCT in Suffolk. About 100 quid all in. Nice people, quick job and transformed my bike (in combination with a new front shock).

It's just the gs - I've just spoken with them and they seem confident they can fettle it :)

Fingers crossed - I'm up in jockland on the 11th April for a week!!

ABE in greenwich will rebuild your shock. About £100 for re-seal, oil and re-gas.
Maybe a bit more of they need to machine up a damping rod (which can wear).
Get it there for a weds and it'll be back a day later. :thumb2

If it helps I've got an original GS rear shock in my garage. It was still fully functional when removed, just a bit tired after 35,000 miles. I sold the bike with the Wilbers fitted. If you can nurse your bike up here it is yours FOC and you can fit it in my garage, I have tools. If yours is too shot I can send mine to you for the cost of a courier, should be less than £10.00 as I have a trade account. It should do for a good few thousand miles.
