WHAT DIGITAL CAMERA?

I'm pretty new to PC's and fancy the idea of getting a digital camera if only to show my pics on this site like everyone else.
What can you recommend value versus practicality..family shots high days and holidays... bike shots and scenery......any suggestions?

Bargain forum

Have a look in the 'Bargain Forum' on here, there was one touted in there a couple of days ago for £49. Can't go too far wrong at that price.

I had a fairly cheap Olympus Camedia which took good pictures every time. I moved up for a C720 Camedia which has a bigger lense and 24x zoom. This takes superb pictures but not all the time as its a bit fangled even for me. The previous was vitually point a shoot - Bingo

Have Fun

Canon

I would recommend any of the Canon Powershot range.

Good features and quality images. Also come with good software package.

I have a Powershot S50 - 5 Megapixel (MP)

More MP = Better Image quality

I recently got a A60 off Amazon at a good price for my other half.

Check out www.dpreview.com for tests and info.

cheers

Sony DSC-V1.

I can't recommend this camera highly enough.

5MP and small enough to fit into a Hein Gericke Rallye top pocket but not so small as to make it difficult to use.

Had mine packed up on holiday last year I couldn't have complained. It got a lot of hard use in some rather damp conditions yet it never missed a beat.

I paid £500 this time last year but it can be had from HERE for £350.

I have two fuji Finepix cameras, a compact fits in the pocket 6800 which gives excellent quality pics/movies, and I've just recently bought an slr shaped S5000 which has more features and a better zoom and is 6 mega-pixies... I'd recommmend both but it illustrates the 'what do you want it for' question, if its to go biking with I'd go for the compact 'lens folds away when u swith it off' type every time, as to manufacturer, they are all good, just make sure you get appropriate connections for the pc, preferably a cradle for it to sit on all the time to keep the battery topped up....

Olympus mju 300

perfect for carrying on the bike as it is totaly weather proof. Excelent picture quality and small enough to fit in any pocket. Shop arround and you should get one for less than£200.
They also do the mju 400 but unless you are wanting to blow pictures up to A3 or above it's not worth paying the extra.

Bought my Olympus Camedia 3.2MP ofa them saved myself £100 on list prices, its a cracker! Tho it now has been upgraded to 4.0MP's, so should be even better, not to mention the soft ware that came with it....It's tiny with a neat little telescopic lens, with 10x zoom.....and great for panoramics. it'll take up to 250MB memory card= 360 High Qaulity photo's, mega!

Schwarz.:D :D :D :D

started with a fuji DX10 which bounced fairly well
next was a Canon S50 which did'nt :( insured :)

now have a Sony P5 3.2 mp's from ebay £100 mint
havn't dropped it yet,but for that money who cares :p

Canon Powershot A70

Is what I use, and my pics are great :)) NOthing to do with the location of course, it's all down to the camera. Seriously, it's dead easy to use, takes little videos too, and the picture quality is excellent. YOu can get them cheap now, and they take std rechargeable batteries which is a plus. NOt one of the most compact, and the case is a bit plasticky, but I've no complaints.

Fuji finepix S5000 takes amazing photos and can be had for £234 from Costco. It's got a Zoom lens that could get you locked up

I would tend to agree with all the opinions thus far posted however, I have to say it, had digital cameras since 1998 all have been fuji's and would reccomend fuji digitals to anyone., Currently have a DX-5 1998 model which is very poor quality allthough for its time was reasonable, and my main camera at the Moment is a 2002 Fuji 4900, SLR type. This has been aroung all over the place with me on the bike and has stood up to the vibes and everything well. No longer available as technology moves on but the S5000, or S7000 seem to be very reasonable value and far more tech features than most would need, and at bargain prices.

I bought a Nikon Coolpix 4300 (4 mega pixels) after reading (In WH Smith's) various digital camera mags that gave it 5/5 or top marks in other less easy to understand marking schemes, for value and quality then even me Mum's Which? Magazine gave it top marks.

Jessops have them for £199.99, a price that would p1ss me off if I hadn't got mine in the US for £175 with a $50 rebate still to turn up.

If your intention is only to look at hem on PC screens and post them on the net anything will do. Screens only show 72 DPI anyway so there really is no point paying big bucks. If you want to print to paper however 3.1 million pixels is a must. Personaly I have a cheap olympus £100 new 2 million pixels and a canon ixus 400 4 million pixels. If I were to post up a picture here you would not know which picture was taken with which camera. However if I were to print to proper paper the difference would be fairly clear. Especially If I printed to A4 size.

Plus remember to add to your budget a decent memory capacity card so you can go away for a few days and still have enough space for the photos.

what about the printer?

Do most of you print your own photos?
My colour printer is fine for the kids to do stuff but its not photo quality.
I assume I can order online to get decent quality prints?

Canon PowerShot G5 is what I have. The quality of the pictures is absolutely superb. Richie's got a point about posting them on the screen and the redundancy of good quality from that standpoint, but the advantage of a high-res shot is that you can cut and paste sections out of the shot and enlarge them and still have decent quality.

I couldn't decide between the Sony DSC-V1 (after I saw Boxer's Norway shots, I was really impressed) and the Canon G5. But as the Sony is smaller, it's probably a better choice, although I do believe the quality of the photos with the Canon is ever so slightly better and it has a really cool flip round screen (as do all the powershot range I believe) so that you can get yourself in the shot really easily and protect the screen.

Lots of money, but worth every penny if you value good photos.

US is cheaper than Europe is cheaper than the UK, if you're going to spend a lot of money, it's even worth considering a trip.

I have the Coolpix 4300

However think it is crap and wish I rather bought the Canon A80 for a couple £££ more. The Nikon battery life is rather poor and night focus very desperate. Had Canon before and that will be my next buy if I had to get something else. For what you want to do simple and basic I would not even bother with something bigger than 3.1 mega pixels as it will be more than sufficient with 256 meg data card.

Try www.dealtime.co.uk and www.kelkoo.co.uk for price comparisons on digi camera's. Sorry I can't comment on the fuji or anthing else as I have only had expierence with Canon and Nikon. I belive the new range Samsung is also something to look at - mere speculation but would shop around.

Cheers

my new camera

Just bought the new Panasonic fz10. it has 4megapixels , 12x optical zoom and 3x digital zoomand the lense is made by Leica
so is of pretty good quality. memory is either SD or multimedia cards. cost £350-£450 depending where you buy, but Jessops will match any current deal.
photo of the view from my loo.the windmill is about 1 mile awayso this gives a good idea of the power of the zoom.
