I was checking out the cam followers in my spare engine.

I think it's lack of oil changes or the wrong grade oil. What do you think?

The bottom line is they are knackered along with the cam shaft. £25 each + £85 for a camshaft

I'd check your small end bearings as well, that gudgeon pin hole looks a little worn:D

Poor hardening during production, old age, oil supply problem?

VW PD (TDi 115 ~ 150's )engines do that to their cam followers and end up wearing a dish and if not changed they can go right through them

Bad case hardening

Why change the cam is it badly worn or squared off ??

Usually these followers are much softer than the cams especially when they start to break up

guzzi do it too, they go on for years. i'm the only person i've ever heard of changing them.

seen similar wear on other bmw airheads, although that looks quite a bad one.

can't speak for bmw followers, but new guzzi items are convex. used ones never are.

Do you have to fit a new cam when you fit the new followers?

on some engines flat cam followers are normally matched to a cam with a slight taper on it to encourage the follower to spin, convex followers also open the valve in a different pattern to the flat followers IIRC

On the airheads only half of the followers surface sits on the cam. This makes the follower turn. My cam looks likes it's worn. Anybody got a standard airhead 308 cam laying about?

Probably, I'll check this afternoon :)
