I had mine done for the same problem 2 years ago. Touch wood its still good. Apparently some of the oil seals weren't up to the job from build.

Mmm!

Just had a call from Dealer - Gearbox is out AND apparently there are at least FOUR seals that have/are failing - and need to be replaced!?!?

Makes ya wonder! ... ( btw - warranty runs out on 24th July)

It is amazing that this is still happening - mine (April 2005) was done at around 6,000 miles, 19,600 now and still fine. Surely if a dealer can fix the problem by replacing the seals then why can't BMW build them right in the factory or get their supplier to provide good parts?

My 2005 GS 18,230 miles is going to be checked tomorrow by Ocean as it looks the same as the pictures posted earlier in this thread. Warrenty runs out end 29/7/07. What other things should I get checked before it runs out?

Rear wheel play - should be no more than 1mm at the rim. Grab wheel firmly at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, push and pull, away and towards you - try at several points in wheels rotation. It is hard to estimate 1mm so if you detect any play ask your dealer to check it.

oops, i noticed this on my bike the other day and i'm off to france next week. is it going to make it or do i need to get this sorted before i go?

Probably best to get it sorted before you go, if too much oil gets past the seals and onto the clutch then it will start to slip, which might be a little inconvenient in the middle of a long trip.

Same as engineer, had my seals done under warranty two years ago and fine since. Maybe a bad batch from build ???

The problem goes back to the 2004 1200GS's (maybe on the 1150's too) - I am surprised that BMW have let this go on for more than 3 years - I thought that BMW operated 'just in time' manufacturing (check out the manufacturing date of the plastics) so they should never have a large stock of duff bits. This obviously a quality issue - so ought not to be limited by the 2-year warranty, however I can see some arguments/disappointed customers if it happens after the warranty expires.

Glad that mine went early on, fingers crossed that it doesn't re-occur; Balderston Peterborough seem to have done an excellent job of fixing it.

thanks for the info. I off to the shop tomorrow to get it sorted. Bike is only 12 months old with 8k miles on the clock. Hopefully the repair will last a little longer than the original.

do you think the MSN Protected, the warranty on used bikes bought through Motorcycle news adds would cover this oil seal ?
