............... the mapping!

My 8 went for head bearings at CW blah blah ... but while it was there they installed the latest ignition mapping as I'd commented that the bike felt a little flat.

This ignition program is a little odd... for starters it doesn't pop and bang on the over-run (I liked it a lot when it did that!), but now the new map seems to hold a high idle when the bike's moving. I wasn't sure what was happening until I realised that the idle wasn't dropping immediately when coasting on a closed throttle, but hanging at 1800 rpm.. The idle didn't drop until I came to a halt. Initially I'd put it doen to a cold running thing, but no, it happens all the time, and it seems that the idle will ONLY drop to 1200 at road speeds below 5mph...

So anyway, does anyone else have this version, and how can you identify the map that you have??

s/w update

Hi, my 800gs had the latest s/w laoded around 2 months ago to stop the engine stalling. It fixed the stalling problem and my popping is still there.

It did not impact the tick over, yours sounds too high, pop it back to your dealer.

hope this helps :)

I wrote a thread about my 10 000km service here:
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=162317

As seen above I got a printout from my mechanic with an

a) "Select measure plan" with the onboard, unupdated software map

c) "Final report" - showing the new updates and measures.

In my case the firmware was upgraded from K024-07-10-510 to K024-09-08-550.
My initial thoughts on your idle/low-speed problem is that sounds normal for this bike, but
I'll check that tomorrow at my next ride.

It still pops and farts on the overrun - and I love it. :beerjug:

I'm going to save up for a Power Commander ....:augie

Dont bother mate, you'll spend a lot of dosh for little or no actual gain- spend your cash on a HID light, a better screen, sat nav, chain oiler or even Eurotunnel tickets if you want value for money.

Mine was updated a couple of months ago for the stalling problem (which I didn't have) but now my fuel consumption seems about 10-12% higher on motorways and possibly actually somewhat lower than before at slow speeds. Engine response hasn't changed.

I haven't had pops and bangs since getting an aftermarket exhaust - I think they were probably originally caused by an airleak where my OEM exhaust was clamped on to the header.

Power Commander

Well, I went for my first City ride since having the new map - what a pisser!

I hate the new fuelling/idle control - it's damn near dangerous in certain circumstances - hugely reduced engine braking, increased coasting speed ... no,no, no - it's not for me.

I spoke with the guys at Dyno Jet today about a PC IV and am sorely, sorely tempted by it.. (the forthcoming purchase of a mint NS400R being the only obstacle here...) Where it give positive gains are in the mid-range, where the OE map leans the bike so far back to give effective emissions reading the PC will richen the FA mix, and at, though to a lesser degree, the top end of the range where the OE FA ismix enriched to reduce noise levels (?) the PC will lean it back to give a more efficient - but louder - burn. Both the MooreSpeed Racing and DynoJet estimated upto a 30-40 percent increase in midrange power & torque, with much much cleaner fuelling throughout.

The optimum solution:

PC IV + Remus pipes and end can + dyno set-up ... MooreSpeed could do a deal for about £700

The tightwad solution (apart fron leaving it well alone..)
PC IV with pre-loaded maps, de-cat your own down-pipe, home fitted about £275.00 + time.

The bloke at Moorespeed did say though, that if the OE pipe is de-catted, then you shouldn't just leave the empty chamber as it creates all sorts of resonant pressure waves which might fcuk up the back-pressure and can secondarily upset fuelling... much better to fabricate a straight link pipe, or conceal one inside the chamber if you need to retain the OE look of the pipes..

I will resume the savings programme... (I already have HID, SatNav, a can of chain lube and a new visor - Eurotunnel tickets were purchased last week - bummer! )

Ok - just a quick update on this mapping thing...

I spoke with CW who were surprised I'd brought his up - they've not had any other complaints... maybe I'm just a picky bugger! I asked if the fuelling map could be rolled back to the previous version, but no - once it's updated it's updated.. no going back! However, true to form they were very accommodating and asked me to bring the bike back again, to have the parameters re-set, principally the idle speed.
I arrived there this morning, my 8 was the first into the shop, but the tech came back with a print-out saying there was some kind of intake airflow problem... he said they'd never seen this fault before and had to research it with BMW main tech before they could release the bike... hmmmm I'm still waiting for the answer, hopefully will get it back tomorrow, but in the meantime have got an absolute stonker of an R1150R as a loan bike..!

sounds like a completely different fault then, not the fuel mapping at all:nenau

Yup ... the intake airflow thing was a spurious reporting glitch caused by the dodgy contact, I'm still stuck with the variable idle speed problem ...

Greg

are they still trying to fix that?
