What is the Best GS, Which on is BS??

What is the best model of GS? Someone told me that some of the 1200's are dodgy but of course he is a 1150 owner.
Anyone out there owned a few different models? Are there some reliability issues with the early 1200's?

2005 standard 1200GS without all that servo, ABS, ESA and ASC nonsense is by far the best one.
The clunky old 1150 is just soooooo last year.

Interesting views for everyone here!

Having owned an 95 1100 and an 05 1200, I eventually sold my 1200 and decided to keep the 1100 as I just couldn't justify why one bike could be worth 10000 Eur more than the other when I actually couldn't get any more out of it (the tank range on the 1100 is actually more than the 'standard' 1200) and the adventure was paradoxically a bit too lardy for me to ride off-road (wait for it, I know I'll get slammed for that!) :hide

Also regarding the servo brakes, not sure about some of the other comments made. Surely the reason to remove them must have been only about cost-saving? Otherwise why would many car manufacturers use them?

It's all to do with master cylinder to slave cylinder size ratio.
On a bike the master is relatively big compared to the slaves and there are less slaves to push out.
If servo assist was needed on bikes, why would BMW be the only ones (?) using it?
You can stop pretty much any (half decent) bike on the road with enough power to lock the front or lift the rear wheel. What more do you need?:nenau

I've had my 1150GS from new in November 2003. It has the servo brakes which have not given any trouble in 50,000 miles. I'm certain that they will fail at some time and that is a concern. I hope it's not when some clown pulls out of a side road in front of me or when I'm braking for the hairpin at Knockhill!

I've also had 1200GS demonstrators as loan bikes several times over the years whilst mine has been in for a major service. I was never happy with the front end feel from the earlier 1200's and it is only the latest revision for model year 2009 that feels good enough to maybe tempt me.

However the 1150 does nearly everything I need of it from commuting including filtering to track days (where I need more accelertation) and off roading so why spend another £10,000 less around £3,000 for a ratty part-ex?

Then of course there is the proliferation of plastic on the 12's. It will probably fade horribly over the years and be very expensive to replace.

In your own words

".....2005 standard 1200GS without all that servo, ABS, ESA and ASC nonsense.......is just soooooo last year." Is what you really meant, Engineer!

:beerjug:1100s, 1150s, 1200s - there're all as common as muck. Get yourself a nice 850 I say. Be scene and not herd.:toungincheek
