What is the BMW name for the r100gs engine?

Thanks

Is there any code that makes reference to the number of cylinders, displacement,…

The R designation tells you it's a twin cylinder flat twin. followed by a number representing the capacity (R65 etc)

Wikipedia has some info here --> Link

There is a number stamped on each cylinder to show the capacity - 10 for 1000, 80 for 800 etc

I always thought that type 247 was the Bike not the engine notation
i.e. Type 247 is a GS
BUT Wikipedia, (and Rob), says that I am incorrect
( and I have just looked at my R80 mono - and that has Type 247...stamped on the Frame plate)

I did not think that BMW Bike engines has series numbers, like say Merc, (i.e. a W124 can have a number of different engines with say designation M103, M104 etc), or BM cars

It does say 247 on the chassis plate so I assumed it referred to the bike as a whole rather than just the engine. :nenau

But if my R80 mono is Typ: 247, and your GS is Typ: 247, and my G/S was Typ: 247, then as Rob says it must be the engine.

Although it seems illogical to me as, as you have said, the Typ: number is recorded on the Frame plate

It's even got type 247 stamped on your camshaft.

The R45/65 engine is a type 248/1

/5 bikes are 246

Oh, I believe you - I am not disputing it - just saying that I was always under the wrong impression

I'll wear you down yet Bill :comfort

Talking of 247. Can I tempt you with a 90/6 (in the for sale section) For a modest outlay you would have a very nice bike and the potential for a tidy profit.

No Rob......although it looks a nice Bike.

I am trying to "cut down" to about 4 or 5 "mint" Bikes.......getting rid of all the others that I have. I have just sold my last R80GS Basic and R80G/S plus quite a few of the related stuff that I had.

Just out of interest, I do not think that a GS will be included.

My "first love" is my 1985 R80 mono - ride it most days out here and just prefer it to the GSs that I have had, as most of my riding is on road although the R80 mono is not bad for knocking around the vines and green lanes in France.
I have an R90S, use it only very occasionally as it is now part of my "old age" investment pot, together with my R100RS Motorsport.

I still have a few Bikes to sell and although I would like an R69S, (maybe too expensive), I fancy a K1 for this autumn/next year. Never had one and they are completely different to the GS.

Good luck with your sale.......at that price any new owner can have a great time on an airhead for little money.....and even if it is not for him, he will always get his money back......unlike any of this modern stuff!

No reply after three years? I've had a search on the Net and can find no answer to this question. I also have '102VD' on the raised block on the left side of the crankcase. My engine number is '25/89/0262' which I/Ds it as an R100GS-Paris Dakar built in June 1989.
