What (KTM) Panniers

For solo touring the plastic ones would be fine, but for two up someone gets the smaller pannier, 31L is not much - even less when it is in an awkward shape, and even less again when it is a side loading affair.

The SW Trax I have on the S10 are great, 37L on the smallest side and easy to load from the top.

It appears KTM have switched vendor, the metal offering is not TT but Givi these days.

I can handle the wide load as I do not tend to tour around Europe's busiest cities at rush hour, do plenty of that in my day job. rather have easy to load / unload luggage and the space we require in exchange for a slight delay in heavy traffic on the rare occasions we have to filter.

Facetiousness aside I do occasionally use the panniers ;) for trips with Amanda but find a roll bag and tank bag are more than enough for when I'm on my own.

It's just that............well............I hate panniers and top boxes! Have I ever mentioned that before? :D

Andres

There you are you see! We do have something in common.

I've just stuck a tape measure across the KTM panniers fitted to the standard model and they're near enough dead on 1m wide. That's pretty big by any standards but they give a nice secure platform for a Lomo 60l roll top bag which comfortably takes all my camping and cooking clutter without the weight being too far back and over the rack.

Out of interest why do you still have the original KTM pannier fitting kit in place - looks better with them removed and saves a little bit of weight ;)

I haven't got side boxes, but have left my 'hangers' in place because they make handy tie down points!

The KTM/Touratech metal cases look really wide to me, and a bit odd fitted to the 1190S. The R possibly carries them a bit better due to the increased height.

i rest my case - probably on every corner.

Fitted KTM Metal Boxes (Re-Badged Give Trekker Outback) and they are pretty wide - will be like trying to filter in a Nissan Micra, but as I want them mainly for trouncing around Europe on empty roads I can live with that.

Fugly permanent brackets are a bit shite and SW-Motech quick release Evo's cannot take the Trekker Outbacks (any other Givi and a whole load of other panniers, but not these) I am hoping they may bring out a kit for this setup at some point, but for now will live with the ugliness in exchange for the huge 48L / 37L capacity - and generously measures as the 37L SW inner bag I have fits inside the Trekker with 1-2cm of space all around (on the 37L SW pannier it is a close fit)

A pity the KTM integrated ones weren't just a shade bigger, but the 30L odd shaped exhaust side pannier is pretty useless for us with one bike to be the Mule we only have a pannier each plus a top box each for our spare visor / gloves / waterproofs.

i like my andystrapz soft bags. they don't have so much room, but there's not that much in it. i just pack less.

two up, i have to take the powerparts/TT ali top box off as otherwise it gets a bit cramped.

As has been alluded to in previous:-
Whichever you go for, try to get a test ride with some load in the panniers representative to what you may be carrying.
Take it on a 'private road' and up to 100mph ish, look out for instability.
You may not normally ride this way but there can be serious weaving/wobbling.

Witnessed on mate's 2wk old SA, not same as yours but looking at www, similar situations have been reported on 1190.
He had the KTM Touratech ones that really ought to come with a width warning - made filtering on M25 a very mind-focussing event!

Dunno if everyone has seen this I posted on another thread, but might be of interest to some:
I didn't like the GIVI/KTM ones I got with the bike, so I took a gamble on these from Turkey http://www.globescout.com.tr/ via an Italian supplier http://www.safeximpact.com/

They took a bit of engineering to fit the rails:

A fair bit of scaffolding but not as on the piss as the GIVI/KTM offering:

Look much nicer than the GIVI boxes too. Much prefer the exhausts cut out.:thumb2

Expedition ready with two support trucks to follow and pick up bits.:augie

The only thing I think might be a problem is where the plastic parts are on the corners they have bolted them on rather than riveted, so the end of the bolt and nut stand proud inside which will rub on my bags (GSA bags fit perfectly ;)) and damage them eventually. Im sure I can find something to prevent it though.

I'll report back next month after a 6500 mile trip to Norway and back.

I've just got Bumots for my Africa Twin and they'll be going on the KTM next year . Just need to buy the appropriate rails. I went wide at 45/41 litres but you can get 40/36 as well . Great quality and frames powder coated
