what luggage for a trip to the swiss alps

And the pillion makes a good spotter for traffic on the tighter passes as he/she can look further up the road while you concentrate on the corner. :thumb

The dilemma is this:
I am going on a trip to the swiss alps, including stelvio etc in august.
I have a 2010 gsa.

Shall I take the alu panniers and top box i have so i have plenty of space but also plenty of weight which will be a hinderance on the passes.

or Shall i take off the panniers and go with a top box and seat bag for the sleek look, so i can chuck the bike about but not have as much luggage space

or do i sell the the gsa and buy a ducati 1198 for the trip?

Hi Oly, trust that you had a trouble free journey back from Assen. Thanks again for sorting the tickets :thumb2.

I did the Dolomites incl Stelvio 2 years ago. There are a lot of roads in the area that would be to die for on a 1198 but not the Stelvio or some of the other passes. Too tight to get the 1198 into it's stride. Your GSA would be better for the tight twisty passes. Can't you leave the luggage at the hotel? Re positioning the top box where the pilion pad should go, take pillion pad off, balance top box where pillion pad was, try swinging right leg over box to mount the bike! Not easy, esp in sweaty bike gear. A technique similay to John Cleese ministry of funny walks would work but will make you look a plonker.

had a good trip back from assen. good to meet you, hope your missus enjoyed it!
Think I may just take all my luggage and leave the panniers at the hotel, we a re there for 3 days, st moritz i think.
Think the ducati will have to wait, i darent put my gsa on here as it stands me at around £14500 with all the bits and i couldnt stand the stupid bids i would get. I would need to realise £13k to get the 1198 that i wanted.

Ps Top box staying where it is:thumb2

Take as much as you can!

You can load up a GS and not feel any real difference - on the move anyway. The Swiss Alps in August can be wet, cold, or dry and VERY hot and various shades between! - so be prepared. At the moment I wear one of these jackets which are simply netting, holding the armour in place - Heine Gericke - and it is still too warm in town. (About 34àC at present.)

All you need

I take all I need and depend on what time a year where you have to be prepare for any weather change, is better to take all you need.
Especial on the mountains.
Check this not included camp gear.
