What oil weight for an 1150gs in Norway in winter?

Hi there.

I'm being bombarded with conflicting information regarding the engine oil I should be using for a trip to Norway (inside the arctic circle) in winter. Anything from 10w40 semi to 0w30 fully synth. I have attempted to search the forum but haven't come up with anything conclusive. Is there any concensus on UKGSer?
Or anyone who has done/does similar?

Any and all advice greatfully recieved. :)

I purchased the bike, new, back in Jan 2000. The owners handbook has, unfortunately, long since fallen by the wayside... um, somewhere.

Oil and battery

Hi!

You will do fine on 10W-40 oil if temperature not below -20, and your battery is fresh. Oil get thicker in cold, and battery get weaker.
There is 0W-40 oils to get, if very cold, use it. With a fresh, top charged battery.

10w40 is my prefered choice. I have a brand new Odyssey PC680 battery fitted. Many thanks.

Heh. Oddly enough. Pretty much bang on. :)

Not using heated clothing since it is just something else to go wrong and generally just a load of faffing about. Fitted a set of Tucanos, supplied by one Val_H of this parish. Most of my gear is all the stuff I've previously used for winter mountaineering. Well, that and my trusty old BMW seattle jacket and troos. I'm considering using my Scarpa Vega plastic mountaineering boots too. If I find that changing gear is still reasonably easy.
 
One cold morning.... It was ca.-35c that night. :eek:

Well, it was at Krystallrally, Oset hotell up in the mountain a little north of Gol, February. (Pictures from last year http://krystallrally.no/?page_id=200 )

Ca. 50% (I think?) of the bikes needed help to start on Sunday, we jumpstarted with help from cars.

My old boxer (the engine from 1978) had a good battery in good shape, but there was no hope... Thin oil help a lot, but when it is that cold many struggle, even if the battery is ok.

But once the engine was running it all was ok!
After one hour I stopped, and there was no problem to start it again after 20 minutes.

So; what oil? Thin. But make sure your batteri is 100% ok, and bring jump start cables.
