Just returned from a tour including the Pyrenees, camping at Aux les Thermes. It was 36 deg all day, just had a short shower so it was humid and although I was freshly covered in Boots insect repellent a herd (only way to describe it) found they had fallen in love with my tee shirt. These buggers can fly and hover, also chase after you. What are they and was I justified in throwing a bit of a wobbly when attacked by them?

I remember in the summer of 76 (yeah that one!)we had a mini plague of them! something to do with the wind direction or something....damn things are thugs of the air!!!
 
Stag Beetle

They normally live in soft sand banks under ground and tend to fly at night. They make a hell of a noise/mess if they hit you at 60!

They dont actually bite you, but will give a nip with teh pincers if you provoke it, fair enough though really!

by the way - there's a lovely heated paddling pool in Aux :D

I put my helmet on after a stop and rode off,after about 100 yards,I felt a bit of a wriggling on my head,so gave the helmet a slap to stop the wriggling.It didn't stop,so I did,and it was one of them.

It died of it's injuries.I do have a piccy somewhere.

Check your hats people:D

You want to be more careful where you put your helmet.
