Am flying to Marrakech with SWMBO for a weekend later in the year. Have already booked a hotel, ten minutes taxi ride, from the square (obviously not the proper name !) and will be on foot, or in a taxi. So what i'm after is suggestions - what to do, or see, where to eat etc. Fancy looking at some Morrocan architecture and possibly a mosque (not sure what the score is with wifey though):thumb

Marrakech

We, that is myself Swmbo and 10 year old son, spent christmas week in Marrakech - probably too long weekend would have been better for me (although SWMBO liked the week!).

Things to do: get a guided city tour through the hotel - well worth it and the guide we had was very good and interesting. Took us to places we would not otherwise have seen - Salladin (spelling?) tombs are amassing, as is the medina if you do not mind huge numbers of people.

The main square is a definite must after dark - it is one of the 7 wonders and truly a sight worth seeing.

Jewish cemetry, horse drawn tour of the walls - all worth it.

DO NOT get conned in a carpet shop - guide will take you to one - take it as a rest and a drink (their mint tea) then at end say thanks - but not interested and stick to it very firmly and politely. Unless you want a carpet - then take ages selecting one and offer about a quarter (yes a quarter) of what they start and go from there but aim to end up paying half what they start at. This "rule of thumb" applies to most things but be prepared to look interested and then if still not near the price walk away disinterested - they will come after you! This also applies to "Governemnt Shops" but is not likely to be so succesful.

Taxis are very cheap and plentifull - use the tatty looking beige Fiats - much cheaper than mercedes. But critically agree price before you get in and check with hotel when you get there what the "going rate" is between hotel and town and stick to it! Not expensive but why pay more than you need to.

The down side is the high pressure sales from all comers - even if you ask the way some how or another they will "help you" then expect payment. I found it rather intimidating - but not SWMBO (but then she spent a couple of years living in the middle east so understands the culture and gives as good as she got).

Whilst tempting I found the "4 by 4" trip to the mountains a huge disappointment and more about going to "friends" of the guide for them to try and fleece you. I should have stuck to my original plan of hiring a car and going to the mountains on my own.

Not that I drove but it all seemed ok. Loads of police (but when we were there the king was in residence and noticibly more security) but we all felt very safe - even when we accidentally got caught up in a football crowd.

Hope this helps!

Just read my earlier post to my wife and she says: "Its shopping heaven get rid of the men and go on your own!".

The choice is yours!

Try and get the hotel to book you into Le Comptoir, up market restuarant/bar great atmosphere, belly dancers with candles on there heads :nenau, and great food . It's a good place to take SWMBO to earn those special browny points. Book it well in advance though and make sure you get a table down stairs. :thumb

For architecture visit the Madrissas (islamic schools) which you can get into unlike most mosques.
The Jardins de la Majorelle are amazing but get there very very early.

Otherwise wander around the Medina. Its still a medieval city. If anyone 'helps' you give them 1-10 Dh. If they complain head for the nearest policeman, they come down very hard on hasslers. Remember to just say no politely 2-3 times and most people will leave you alone. Another trick, in the souk, is to say that this is your first day and you are just looking.

Have a great time. :bounce1

Visit the souk adjacent to the square
Be watchful of pick pockets
