Come on, give me a clue :blast

As you know I have a less than mint r80g/s. It's tidy enough but really want something different for a bit of greenlaning (and the odd rally). The front end is rubbish, there is a lack of ground clearance, but the motors a peach.

Do I

a/ Do an airhead special on tight purse (no means for a full HPN :()

b/ Leave it alone and sell it on for something more modern???

I really would like a special airhead, but looking at the cost of the HPN frame mods and longer swingarm, I really cannot afford.

Any cheap ways of making it better?

Alternatively, it may be a case of what you got to swop for it?

Hey up
Your g/s will doo nealy all the "green lanes". Some folk think that because it is not tarmac it is a motocross track = big KTMs tossers on crossers etc.
Have a look at the TRF site have a look at trail riders in general. Most like to ride at a sencible speed up to 20 - 25 mph any 250 /350 would accomodate that and be easy to lift up when youve dropped it !
I am not saying that because you have a big un you are a trail ripperupper
You ride at what ever speed you want, but be aware that the more folk that
rip the trails up, upset the walking ****ers. ride on farmers land at the side of the trail = the sooner they all shut
Having got me rant over I have gone down the couse of a XT600 cheap cheerful easy to mend etc
I think the Ideal trailbike is a DR350 - it is slightly heavier but better on the road than the mighty serrow
Speed when its safe to - if you hit a pedestrian on a trail it is under the same laws as on the road up to 30 = they may live

Ian selling a Dr or XT 350 int he ???

HTHY you can have a go on my 600 if you want to try

As Mick says Ian (Mr I Fan) is selling both a DR350 and a DRZ. Either of those should be perfect for you. And not too far away either!

I have a mate who is selling a DRZ 400 Kick start:spitfire:mad: great bike mind you

He wished he had bought a DR350 slower but not as firery easy to ride magic button on bars I would say a far best first bike of the two

I would also say
bring yer g/s out and try it more thet go where you wont beleive
but they are a fookinevylump when youve sunk um :thumb

I'd say if you really love home mechanics late into the evenings mod the airhead.

If you want to ride dirt, buy the other bike. You know it means less work and more fun:thumb

Its not like you don't already have a GS now is it:D

I have a paralever GS front fork/yoke/spindle assembley available

I have access to a KTM front end, wheel et all. The front end is the biggest problem for me, it's very crude and not very strong. Just a bit of a big job to swop although the rewards should be brilliant. Problem is it will no doubt highlight the back end weaknesses :nenau

It's only done 40k so it runs really well. Don't want to rip it up, but I'm used to a plush ride that modern bikes give.

Had a 450 berg but didn't fancy doing the road miles on it whereas the GS would eat 100 miles before off roading and then get me home to. Fancy something to ride to the cambrian, ride at the cambrian, then ride home. I have an 1150 and green lane that, but wanted something a bit lighter and easier to manage but still do the road work bit.

You could get Maxton to sort the standard front end out for a couple of hundred quid. They re valve the dampers to suit your weight and fit a matched set of fork springs.

The KTM front end would be a huge amount of work. I'd either take Airfan up on his front end set up or sell the bike and something thats more suited to what you need. It would be a shame to have another Mono cut up when they are getting very thin on the ground.

That was my thoughts regarding chopping her around.

I really fancy having a go at the KTM front end but am concerned about the frame being too weak to support it. The other option would be to get a paralever and chop that around instead :D:D:D

I have some of the same considerations and my main reasons for not starting building my own special is the cost and the fact that I have no garage or shed to work in.

So for now I just plan and try to aquire parts from e-bay. I have also asked for prices on some modifications. Besides HPN also www.Gletter.de can also carry out 1) frame reinforcements at 650 euro and 2) extend the swingarm by 50 mm incl. an exchange shaft at a total of 350 euro.

Of course a new XChallenge would be a lot less work but I just like my airhead too much to let it go.

When the time is right I will start the work and until then I just ride the bike as it is.

Merry christmas
