What's best to reduce wind noise?

.EDIT - On a regular GS12 and a GSA I've just wound the stupid little pice of perspex right back and got on with it. If that doesn't suit then try a ... Goldwing!

He shoots he scores :D

It's a dual sport bike FFS :blast

If you don't want wind blast and buffeting then buy something else. BuMW do the RT / LT if you must have a BuMW, or you could take the car :P

Go faster?

It's a motorcycle, snerkler, which you tried out before you bought it, having panicked whether you would be tall enough.

You have had it five minutes and now it makes a noise. Stick copies of the Daily Telegraph in your ears, it will cure everything.

PS The crud catcher won't help.

PPS If you don't believe me (which is quite likely) search Noise in the 1200GS section. Lots of good tips.

PPPPS Don't forget to get a locking oil filler cap AND a locking wind deflector, in case somebody steals them.

I think you might have confused me with someone else on here becasue I don't ever remember panicking I wouldn't be tall enough  I'm 6'4", why wouldn't I be tall enough.

I have to say, I'm quite surprised at the amount of stick I've got off this thread, maybe some have misunderstood?

I noticed the noise on the test bike, so was something I was aware of, but thought I might be able to reduce it by altering the screen, which I can't.

Regarding the buffeting, I didn't mean it was bad compared to the Tiger, I meant it was good, very good infact (unless I lower the screen right down).

Finally, I except that you're going to get wind noise on a bike, not a problem really as I don't think it's bad enough to casue damage. All I was getting at was if there was that it is noisier than the Tiger, and wanted to know how best to reduce it. If nothing is effective then not a problem, but if there is something that works I'll try it as why suffer noise if you don't have to?

Quite possibly.

Oh, I know what it was, it was the weight of pushing it.

How was the Search vis-a-vis 'noise'? Try adding, 'buffeting', too.

WTF?

Unfortunately, I cannot find a clip of David Lean's classic, 'The Sound Barrier'.... "Buffeting, buffeting......buffeting"

Hi snerkler

have tobinators and laminar lip and has made motorway speeds alot more peaceful, still wear earplugs though, some cheapo things i get from work.
wind now hits just above top of visa

Buffeting is noise???

Strange coincidence this thread comes along just as I was thinking of asking the same.

Is buffeting the wind jogging your head around or a noise? Before I got my 2008 GS I read about the buffeting, thought it meant jogging your head around, got the bike, found it didn't happen, forgot about it.

I'm 6 foot tall BTW.

Then just yesterday I was riding along and had the idea to stick my head out to the side away from the screen. I could not believe how much quieter it was! My old bike, a VFR750, made the same noise, which is why I never realised it could be any different.

I normally ride with in-ear headphones (Shure SE210) which cures it, but I'd like to cure it properly.

Do Tobinators (potentially) cure the noise? Or do they just fix the head jogging, which I don't have?

Buffet. 1. n. blow with the hand (arch), blow dealt by wave, wind etc, or by fate or fortune. 2. v.t. & i. deal blows to... you know you're experiencing buffeting when your head and possibly body is bobbing around from the force of the wind hitting it.

I believe that on bikes wind buffeting is always accompanied by wind noise but you can have wind noise without buffeting.

The way see it is that buffeting is the wind turbulence that you physically feel, that makes the looser parts of you jacket etc flap, and as you put it make your head 'jog' around. I've found that this is vastly reduced on the GSA compared to other bikes I've had, but in doing so makes the wind/air passing by my head very noisy. If I duck my head about an inch or 2 then it's much quiter, hence me thinking that a spoiler might help. As i'm 6'4", and need to duck down an inch or 2, those of you around 6' tall must find it very quiet?

Incidently I've put handguard extenders on and they seem to have casued an increase in buffeting around the shoulders. Nothing major, and not a problem, just thought I'd mention it

Buffeting - one of the oldest chestnuts in the 12GS forum.

Best thing I did with my GS was ditch the screen altogether. Screens only make sense on a non-sportsbike when they are very small - think flyscreen - or really big - think barn door. A middle size screen is worse than nothing. Plus, ditching it is free and doesn't involve any furtive mail-order activity. :augie

Why do people talk about the screen on a GS when this guy has a GSA.

If he listened to half the information in this thread he would be going to BMW and buying a screen exactly the same as what he already has.

Get hold of any plastic sheet of suitable rigidity, cut a pice about 200mm then stick it to the stock screen and adjust the height until you are satisfied.

Stick it on using lots of masking tape.

When you have the exact height that you are happy with then hunt around until you find something that is the same size as this bit of plastic.

Perhaps the touretech screen extender will suit but you will have a good idea before you part with the cash.

The screen extender is ok for me.

The solution

Last year on a trip to N Wales I was suffering from the usual buffeting and noise on my 1150GS with an Adventure windscreen (now on a 1200GS :clap:clap). As I passed through the tunnels along the A56 there was ............ silence. Why is this? Was the air moving at a speed closer to my actual speed? There must be an aeronautical engineer or whatnot on here who understands fluid dynamics in a practical sense.

So, find a bloody long tunnel and all will be well.
