Whilst giving the bike a clean i have noticed this.......... IT is the rear gaitor photographed from inside the arm (rear wheel of) I cannot see any signs of it rubbing against any thing at all

Could some one please advise -

1 - WHat is the possible cause
2- How do i prevent it happening again
3 - Is it a major job to repalce
4 - Is there likely to be any internal damage?

Thanks for your time

In answer to your queries I would hazard the following suggestions

1 : Cause ? looks like either breakdown of the rubber due to oil contamination, or a small split on the rubber (possibly by a small stone if off-roading) made worse by the lubricating gease coming out through it

2 : I suggest you remove the gaiter and replace with a new one - see if you can find any source (eg brake fluid) that may have weakened the rubber in the first place and ensure it doesn't happen again

3 : Can't answer that one - haven't done it (yet)

4 : Damage would depend on how long it had been exposed to the elements - you could have been lucky and got away with it - but there is a chance that road dirt, water and crud ahve found their way in there - which could damage the joint. Strip it down to see. If OK, regrease and fit a new boot.

They're all over the place just recently... Beaver Hewn Trees

Be incisive man!

Dammit, log your claim with Paul and make him stump up!

Hope it's not your gaiter twixt swing arm and gearbox or you have serious frown time. Cheap to replace....except......have to discontect paralever to remove swingarm to get new gaiter in. Fingers crossed it isn't taht one - bit blurry.
If it is....you have our sympathies.

just a thought

battery overflow?
coz it doesnt look like "rubbing" damage to *me*.
i could be way off track though - as i am comparing it to old airhead boxers.
anyhow - hth.

Jam,

I've got all the kit for removing the rear bevel drive if you need any help just let me know and I'll pop round and give you a hand. I've got a spare gaiter as well.

.........

cheers all.

It looks to me like i just have to remove the back wheel. Then un do the big nuts on iether side of the swinging arm and then draw the wheel hub end away from the rest of the bike.

Having done that it seems to be just a case of replacing the gaitor and reassembly.

This is how it appears in my world.

is it the same else where?
