What's this cable supposed to be connected to?

I just noticed this cable hanging down under the bike (see pics - sorry about picture quality).

The cable runs up to the seat and then towards the rear of the bike and into the section that contains the rear light cluster connections. All the rear lights seem to work though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is it a cable or a tube?

it could be a tank overflow or a case breather?

which bike is it again....?
 
Thank you. Fuel tank breather sounds spot on.

In case anyone else comes across this thread in search of the answer... Its an F800GS and the "cable" would be more accurately described as a tube. Its quite flexible rubber-looking stuff about 6mm in diameter with a small hole running through the middle.

Hi mate,

everyone is spot on. It is the fual tank breather. It's the same on my 650. I trimmed it down a little so it doesn't hang as much.
Can't see it now...

As already identified ,this is a breather for the fuel tank.There is an inline valve before it reaches the tank and mine was blocked from new(causing a vacuum in the tank and stopping the fuel gauge working).I fixed it as my dealing could not find the reason for gauge not working and were going to replace electrics.

There is a recall to be carried out upon next service to replace the fuel guage sender.:rob

how is it fixed? I have vacumm sometimes

does vacuum make impact on the bikes performance?
 
I had my breather mechanism replaced under warranty earlier this year - there's a mechanical closing device on the uppermost rear edge of the tank, mine was clunking a lot when the bike was rocked on the mainstand... why they couldn't use a simple in-line spring-loaded ball valve instead is beyond me ...

I didn't realise there was a problem with the sender too - is this a global recall?

ZZ10 ... the breather allows air back into the tank as the fuel level drops which equalises pressure .. if this doesn't happen, then a partial vacuum can occur inside the tank which has an obvious impact on fuel flow into the injection system as well as potentially collapsing your fuel tank... there's been a mention of that happening recently...

Calterdon said it was the sender, there wasn't an apparent problem on my bike and they simply stated that they had been instructed by BMW to replace at service. They could have meant the fuel breather valve, maybe it was me just not paying attention?:nenau

But I'm pretty certain it was the low fuel sender in particular that they meant.

thanks, mine does the same

I will check up on that, will check the tank more often until fixed, collapsed fuel tank does not sound to good....
 
breather

As I said earlier my fuel guage problem was fixed by me not the dealer.The small alloy breather is fitted inline with breather pipe.It was corroded inside when I bought the bike new but I cleaned it out and now it all works ok.It was causing the tank to implode as well as guage not working.
PS the breather valve is rapped in some foam above rear mudguard.
