Does anyone know what the black plastic part that is on the BMW GSA ali pannies is for?

Its located next to the catch and seems to be just bolted on with one bolt.

Is exactly what it is... the old ones didn't have 'em.

On one of my panniers the thread was sticking above the nut into the box by about 5mm, the other was flush.

I hadn't spotted it until the one with the extended threaded part tore a slash in my Kreiga panners.

I wasn't very happy and complained to my BMW dealer. They are getting me a new Kreiga bag at BMW's cost.

I asked the dealer what they were for as well and he confirmed vents.

I plan to turn them both around so the nuts are on the outside to avoid the problem happening again.
