I've just bought a 650GS, not taken delivery yet, but already i've noticed differences with other bikes....

can any one tell me what the cylindical 'canister' looking device is hanging from the underside of the silver frame of this Dakar (sorry for pinching the pic, but thanks ;) all the same )

Where as my bike doesn't have said canister

my thoughts are its something to do with the ABS maybe??

Pretty sure its got nothing to do with ABS, because my Dakar had one too and I didn't have ABS. :D

I often wondered what it was too. :nenau

Is your front mudguard on the wrong way round?

mystery cylinder

Your pictures: show a standard GS model and a Dakar variant
The Dakar has different suspension
That 'thingy' is to do with the rear shock for the Dakar variant
Strangely, mine is located behind the engine under the fuel filter - well out of the way :D

tis indeed strange, i had a close look at mine at the shop the other day & its got 2 little tags that look like something should slot onto....however just been searching a few more pictures & i've found both standard GS's & Dakar's without the cylinder....

Looking at the pictures, i've only ever spotted it on on Dakar models, but not all of them....
i'm guessing i don't need to worry too much that mine doesn't have one...

Taff No, the mud flap is on correctly, just the angle of the camera i think, looking at the underside of the mudguard...
heres a pic from the front...

:rob The cylinder thing is only available for dakars. On single spark bikes, ones that have ABS, have the pumps thingies placed under the tank and the extra oil for the damper in the cylinder strapped to the side of the frame. If you dont have ABS then the cylinder is strapped where the ABS pumps should be. Dakars also have the voltage regulator placed in a differnt position to normal GS's. This is again due to the extra tank of oil needed for the damper.

Hope that clears things up slightly.

arrr I see, it all makes sense now....sorry for being a bit slow

Ah yes my old Dakar has one that's not tooked away.
Dropped the bike the other day and nearly fooked it - that would have been unlooky!

I could'nt help but noticing what is the steelwork bolted to the rear of your bike ?Luggage racks maybe?Caribou luggage racks maybe?
I'm in the market for some alternative luggage to BMW's own. Please put me out of my misery and let me know .
Many Thanks . [email protected]
