wheel conversion

hi all,i ordered the alloy wheel conv of motorworks a whileback,but had to send them back because they were a fraction of a mil out,but was told they just bolt on with your speedo conv and abs rings,im still interested but dont want spend 700bangers then have to send back for a refund,anyone got them fitted and whats the out come on them.cheers again paul.

you say they were a thou of a mil out,do you mean out of true or the wheels would not pysically fit on the bike,tell us more?there are a few of bikes in the club with 17inch rims for me personally it was good move as I will never take it off road,plus cleaning those spoke wheels is an ars***e of a job with the alloys it's 2 minute job and you can have a much wider chioce of tyre.Ok they do wear quicker front>5000 rear>3500 thats a pair of pilot sports but the grin factor out wieghs that and I don't do huge miles anyway 9000 since june 00.Andy

yes but why didn't they fit yours? what wheel front or back,what was a thou of a mill out I don't understand that is such a small amount Andy

When I came to re-fit my 5 spoke alloys to the 2002 gs, there was something fouling the front brakes.

After a lot of " wheel in .......look .............wheel out try to suss" it turned out to be the ABS ring. the new pressed steel ring over-laps the lugs it mounts to. I ended up getting a second hand alloy one........hey presto. no more fouling.

But as Andy says, what exactly was it that you were having trouble with and which wheel?

I too use 17" wheels on my Gs bought from Motoworks. The truth is if you have ABS then the front wheel will need machining. Yes , you can use the pressed ABS ring instead of the cast , but on mine anything over 100mph tripped out the ABS. I had the thickness of the ABS mount ( 5mm i think) taken off of the disc mount , so i could use the cast style ones.

Any of you guys with 17" ones (ooer) had any hassle from your respective insurance companies. I am thinking of doing this mod, but think it might get knocked back by my company (insured through BMW-Devitt Da I think). They are very strict insisting on knowing every detail, including things like headlamp protectors.

Seriously though, I've declared my End Can which isn't necessarily street Legal, but the wheels.....nah, they are a safety feature mate, proper road tyres and all that !

They use the same brake Calipers and BMW OE Discs, the wheels are BMW. I'm happy to go with it as they are.

Duncan -- Currently insured via Bennetts , previously via Motorcycle Direct and have always declared all the mods , including the wheels (off a '98 R1100S) , all with no problem -- except the wheels in my second year with Bennetts .
Initially they refused me cover ; this after having insured me the previous year ! After some discussion - including me asking them to put the reason for refusal in writing , they agreed to continue offerring cover - I used the , "you've been insuring me for the past year without any problem" together with coolcan's line of , "the wheels allow me to fit road tyres which are much safer therefore you should be lowering the premium offerred !" These arguements worked - as does the conversion !!!

I have some too

the ones i use came from a R11S and i just build a spacer for them (no sppedo) i use a bicycle computer any way.
this days( I install mine 5 years ago) you can use the rim from the R1150 R,with out any machining,the bolt right on.
here is a photo to show how strong they are(clearance is a issue)
