I HAVE BOUGHT A SET OF 1150 SPOKED WHEELS FOR SPARES/OFF ROAD USE,THEY ARE QUITE SCRUFFY BUT HAVE STAINLESS SPOKES.
THEY CAME DISMANTLED BUT WITH THE SPOKES STILL IN THE RIMS,THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS THAT I WANT TO TAKE OUT THE SPOKES TO CLEAN UP THE RIMS BEFORE REBUILDING THEM,BUT THE SPOKE HOLES IN THE RIMS ARE CORRODED,SO THE SPOKES ARE EXTREMELY TIGHT IN THE HOLES.
I HAVE MANAGED TO REMOVE TWO OF THEM THAT WERE PUSHED SLIGHTLY OUT OF THE RIM BY GRIPPING THEM WITH MOLE GRIPS WITH RUBBER UNDER TO PROTECT THE SPOKE,THEN TWISTING THEM OUT UNTIL THE THREAD REACHES THE HOLE,THEN TWISTING AND PULLING HARD UNTIL THE THREAD CUTS AWAY THE CORROSION.
ONCE OUT THEY WILL DROP BACK THROUGH THE HOLE.
HAS ANYONE ELSE REBUILT ANY WHEELS,AND DID YOU HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.
OR HAS ANYONE HAD TO REMOVE ANY BROKEN SPOKES,DID THEY COME OUT EASILY
OR DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANYHING THAT I CAN SPRAY OR BRUSH ON OR SOAK THEM IN THAT WILL DISOLVE THE ALLOY CORROSION BUT NOT DAMAGE THE ALLOY.
BY THE WAY I HAVE REBUILT MANY CONVENTIONAL SPOKED WHEELS AND DON'T SEE WHY THESE SHOULD BE ANY MORE DIFFICULT IF I CAN JUST GET THE BLOODY SPOKES OUT.
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE WELCOME.

Hi mate, have just had the exact same fun and games with my rear wheel (gs1100),
the only way of removing the spokes was to take cutter to them, tap out (!) the ends thru the rim to avoid damaging holes or jamming the spoke threaded part in the rim!!!:spitfire

many spokes so solid that they bent before moving anyway... heat/release gas etc no effect
I guess if you have lots of time and patience you might get a few out, good luck, but I cut my losses and just went for it!

once out, clear out corrosion/sh*t/etc, and then order a new set of stainless spokes off motorworks (£40 plus post plus locking grub screws £8 these to be returned if my wheel builder says not to bother)

made the difference between having the rim powder coated black Ideal solution long term) or just polishing it up myself, cant justify the cost to myself now:blast

devon rim co. tell me it can be a bastard of a job. they cut the spokes then belt them out wiv an ammer.

Ok Thanks Lads.
I was considering cutting them but it seems a shame to cut up perfectly good stainless spokes,(i am as tight as a crabs arse).
I think i might keep struggling how i am doing it,till i get p*ss*d off.

he really is that tight, and he has the worlds biggest collection of hammers for working on his bikes, and sometimes mine ( when Im not looking that is ) :D

I had a Norton 850 with rusting rims so I bought some luberly Boriani alloy rims to fit. Removed the hubs & gave them (with the Borianis) to a wheel builder. They came back true but slighty offset to the side. If you give them to a wheel builder, send them complete & intact to allow them to get the correct datum. No comeback then....:nenau

next time you come round on your bike i will work on it with my biggest hammer

as rubberscrubber said i really am tight so will not be taking it to a wheel builder.Sometimes it's usefull being tight as you learn how to do things for yourself.

oh my god
he's got a jack hammer

just a thought

if you've got the wheels in bits it might be an idea to get a 21" front rim fitted for off road use as the tyre selection is much better

I don't know if you've ridden the gs off road but they tend to slide the front end quite easily, a better front tyre would help immensley

that's what I'd do if I didn't have the ttr 600

oh and aren't they offset or something and a complete twat to rebuild ??

I'm sure this is no help at all but :nenau:nenau

Not a bad idea rob, depends how easily i can get hold of a 21" rim and spokes.
as for the offset i can measure my other wheels and build these the same.
