Wheel Rim compatibilty

Hi guy, I have a 2005 1200 GS and fancy trying a bit of light off road riding, so I was thinking about buying a second set of wheels to keep some more suitable tyres on.
What I'm trying to find out is if all 2004 onward 1200 GS cast alloy wheels are interchangeable as I don't intend to consider spoked wheels at the moment.

PS. I need to find out fast, as I've just spotted a cheap rear wheel on Ebay that finishes in just under 3hrs....lol.

I have pre 2007 alloys on my 2013 GSA so I would say so. The earlier one appear to be more sought after because they are slightly lighter and a better (imho) design. Plenty of the later ones out there I would think.

Cheers for quick reply, I'm not having much luck searching forums, info seems conflicting, although I've just been told that wheels after 2006 are different and will not fit, but no info on what is different though.

Sorry to jump on your thread but i am looking the opposite to you. Would love to have cast wheels on my 14 GSA as the wire ones are a bugger to clean. If any of the guru's can advise please.

Well thats a piece of nonesense, my ones are off a 2007 bike and fit fine, just use your own brake discs etc. Ohh and you will need the longer wheel studs for the rear alloy, wire wheel ones are too short. I think these changed to single spoke type when the TC came along but im not sure. Mine are off an early GS anyhow.

It appears so...I have since found a parts fische for these bikes and although the wheel style changes the carrier flange part number is the same, which suggests to me that all cast rear wheels are interchangeable.
I missed out on the rear on Ebay, so the hunt for some cheap wheel rims continues.

Provided you use your own brake calipers and discs you will be OK Mix them up and you will find it wont work because the offset is different. Good luck, i just had a look on evilbay and there are plenty on offer, although they are expensive.

If you can wait about 3 weeks, I have a set of cast which would be ideal for using off road. There is a small dent in the front wheel which never caused me issues and they will be cheap as they are sitting in my shed gathering dust.

The 5 spoke alloys are virtually the same weight as the GSA wires. I got mine complete with brake discs and they fitted straight onto the bike.

Mine had some corrosion bubbles so I had them chemical dipped and gloss black powder coated. You could go for paint or powder but if there is any corrosion you will need to remove the original paint.

I used Thyssen Krupp in Tamworth for dipping and CJ Ward in Burton on Trent for my wheels so not a lot of help.

Wing and Son near Totnes did a great job of my GSA frame, engine front cover and a few other parts. http://www.wingspowdercoating.co.uk
They are more refinishers using powder coat than they are industrial coaters so the end result is very smart.

The OEM wheel paint is uber tough so they'll probably need week in the dip tank to shift it. Remove bearings before sending for coating.

I was told the alloys are lighter than the wires but mine were very close when I weighed them with tyres. IIRC, one of the wires as a little less weight than it's alloy cousin. Cant remember which one though. I've heard the 10 spoke type is lighter but can't confirm if that's true.

Though obviously not the carbon variety that would be extravagant.
