12v tyre pump

I bought a car type 12v tyre pump - approx 6"L x 2.5"D x 4"H. Cost £12. Took the cigarette lighter plug off and fitted the proper BMW plug. Have used it for about 5 yrs no problems. I occassionally open the housing and WD40 the moving parts [You can also pump up an air bed if your camping...have a beer or 2 and watch it inflate!]

Lights

Not sure about running spots from the socket. You could damage the wiring running to it as they are taking a fair bit of current [ 2 x 55w say] andd the wiring to the socket is fairly lightweight. Same as Howard with the jumpering.
Cheers

Brackens sell a Touratech adaptor that converts the aux plug on the BMW into a standard car cigarette lighter. This allows the use of all kinds of stuff - mobile phone chargers, powered cool boxes, numerous lights, tyre pumps etc etc

Not sure about trying to jump through the socket though, the wiring really isnt designed for that, and I am not sure about jumping per se. Haven't checked the GS yet, but BMW warned me that jumping my K 75 S could easily blow the engine management system/computer.....

You would have to change the plug for one that fits the aux socket - any caravan accessory shop will have one.

For lights - try Halfords

So what sort of adaptor would you need for a, er you know, thingy.
Anon.

Halfords range of tyre pumps come with an adapter that fits both a cigar lighter and a BMW socket. You can remove the plastic casing from the compressor, cut down the power lead and shorten the air pipe to end up with a compressor that fits into the palm of your hand.

1) Make one!
2) Don't even think about this!
3) Isn't it cheaper and easier to stick 10 into a garage forecourt pump or spend a fiver on a foot pump?

The power socket is fused at 15amps (I think) - that's 180watts. A starter motor on initial bite draws around 300 amps, so I think that you'd pop the fuse pretty quickly if you tried using the power socket for jump starts (in either direction).

A pair of extra lamps draws about 10 amps. As a continuous rating, I think that that is more than I would want to run through that socket.

It's a bugger getting a fully inflated airbed from the garage forecourt to the campsite!

Rob

I'll take your word on that but let me know when you next plan to do it, I'll be along with a camera!

What's wrong with one of those semi-spherical rubber foot pump thingies? They weigh nothing and take up little space.

Greg

Greg,

I picked up the pump, with a broken case, from a car boot sale for £1.50 and the idea came from the micapeak website. The pump fits inside one of my walking boots when the panniers are loaded.

And yes! I do know it's a bit anorakish! But it is very sensible.
(Apart from that I cannot be arsed with a foot pump. I smoke too much so the effort would probably kill me if the exercise didn't).

OK, I now have to agree that these tyre-pump thingies have their uses. I have just returned from a holiday in Canada where I bought a pump from Canadian Tire for just $9.99 (£4.40). They are pretty good at pumping up low volume, high pressure items (like tyres) but pretty useless at high volume low pressure things like li-los or boats.

Best

Greg

Yeah, boats!

You know, the sort of thing that you buy from Toys-R-Us for the kiddies (big and small) to play with in the holiday villa swimming pool or on the beach!
