Where to buy a mains trasnformer that outputs 7.5V DC

My mother came home from the USA yesterday with the latest 'toy' for her knitting machine.

Being American, of course, it has a transformer that converts 110V 60Hz AC to 7.5V DC.

Luckily I managed to stop her before she plugged the damned thing into the socket converter.

But, where on earth can I find a magic black box that will plug into a UK mains socket and output 7.5V DC?

Why not just get one of those step down transformers that US tourists use when they come to Europe? Takes 220V down to 110V. The 50/60Hz won't matter as the AC is rectified to DC.

Search Ebay or just go to Maplin http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=RP90X&DOY=6m3 is a 45W one but they have 100W, 200W and 300W versions

Maybe I'm misinterpreting here, but why can't she plug it into a socket converter???

I presume the 'socket converter' is a 240 3pin plug that has a 110v merkin socket on the back of it??

If so, she can just plug the 110 plug in, the transformer (effectively the second transformer now) will take it to 7.5 v and it'll work....it won't be as efficient as it could be 'cos you're going to 7.5 v in two steps and each time you lose a bit, but if that's what she has got, it'll work

Taking a break to make some hot chocolate, I pondered a while.

I recalled that I used to have an American device that came with an adapter to use in the UK.

Some ferreting about in the bottom of a dark cupboard has produced a plastic brick that changes 240V/50Hz to 110V/60Hz ...

I'll lob that in my mum's direction.

That'd be some really clever device that converted 50Hz to 60Hz (the voltage chage is easy).

Probably doesn't make much difference for a knitting machine.

It's not a knitting machine but a device that programs patterns or something far too boring to get interested in.

As for the voltage/frequency change, I was merely quoting what it said on the label on the front of the device.

Ive just bought mine from there.
£26 to convert 240 to 110volt, that will power anything upto 100Watts.
