There is a transfer box (as L/Rover) so 4 high gears + 4 crawler, thus nae bother in sand. Two wheel drive; diff in the bike wheel; 70% drive bike + 30% drive chair, so you don't have to know how to handle a combination around bends, it drives itself around!. A standard combo, Panther 750 Sloper, actually turned over in the rally; driver in hospital in Dublin. The stand-in stuntman, who actually did the fence jump for Steve Mc Queen in the film "The Great Escape", was in the chair; the capsize didn't cause more injury than he has already sustained in a lifetime of stunts!

Vintage Rally

Earl of Desmond Hotel entrance near Tralee. The rally is a four day event and has been based in Kenmare for the past few years. different route every day, Its been held for the past 36 years every autumn. This year 180 entries, from all over the world, Bud Eakins of ISDT fame attended again, one from Japan,(on a Velocette) New Zealand, Canada, USA, Germany, many fron the UK .
I used to go to it , (first time was the 12 th one different hotel every night ) and used to last longer 5-6 days in total,
The two BMW are both 750 cc there was also a Zundapp flat four but was not out that day. Both the Beemers are UK based and have been used in film work, they come with all the military bits and pieces, except the side car mounted machine gun, the mounting is there .
The other pic is shortly after one Dick Quick from Carlow got knocked off his Rudge but the usual blind young motorist, who is still shocked and will have to pay up for vintage repairs, Cops took statements from witnesses and asked a lot of questions, Good thing they didnt look closely for current tax discs which were rare, that the way it used to be , one wag sporting a guiness label !!
There were several bent bikes after the week not to mention the break downs ( lack of annual maintanance the usuall excuse)
Its one great event organised by the Cork and District Club. There should be a book written about it, the Craic is mighty, all week long.

going past Black stones on Thursday, then followed them round Carragh Lake. Billy

R75 looks the job, fair play to the two boys for getting out and about on them!

The bike on the right is an R75 (1942) and is from Cork and the bike on the left is also an R75 (1941) and is from Kerry.Both bikes have been fully restored by a expert on these bikes in Germany a few years ago.The man rideing the bike on the right uses his ever day.

Love to see/photograph these bikes, would be interested to know if they would be going to the rally next year?
