So I'm gettin' the f**k out of this country. The cars are gettin' too damn big to split lanes. Moving to Ireland. She's waiting for me, that's why.

I am deliberating between shipping my GS1100 and trying to find a replacement in the UK or the mainland. Can anyone point me in the direction of a '99 -'01. I would like to upgrade to 1150, but a '99 with what I have on mine would be great: heated grips, hand guards, plastic head guards, Jesse panniers and top box.

One other question before I get annoying if not already, any knowledge out there on the cost (tax, toll, tariffs, pay-offs) to bring a bike into Ireland from the States?
Thanks.

F**k you Yank! We don't need you coming over here, taking one of our lovely ladies out of circulation, burning down our quaint roadways like it was your California freeway. Sounding like some rich snob, pretending like you like Guinness, thinking you can deal with the cold and wet weather (and the sheep). :dabone :nono :doh :monkeypiz :tosser

But I'm not rich. I still owe $4000 on my GS.
I would take Heineken over Guinness, truth be told.

Tax situation

Check VERY carefully your tax liability for importing a bike into Ireland, I was there in the summer and bike prices new/used are incredibly high. Something to do with the taxation system so check first.

You must own and have the use of the bike for 26 weeks in one calender year to avoid paying VAT, Customs Duty and Import Duty. if you do not qualify for the above then sell your own bike and buy one in Ireland (used prices are good here because the economy is slipping back) or buy one in the EU and import it ...... and pay VRT. I will tell you about this later. Where in Ireland are you coming to and where is SHE from ? :beerjug:

Thanks Luke and the rest of ya. I'm moving end of December to N. Sligo. She's from Co. Down, but living in the spit of Co. Leitrim that touches the sea.

I've only had my GS for 3 months and 4000 miles. It's been a blast. I'd post pics but I guess I can't yet.:beerjug:

In fact the idea of buying anywhere in the European Union ain't bad. Some countries are far more cheaper, and you can bring them in to Ireland without much fuss (paperwork).

This means a cheaper bike AND a nice ride through Europe.

Maybe we should put a list up what a bog standard GS costs in each country. Let competition start playing out here.......

In France a standard, no options 1150GS costs 12,250 Euros. There are a lot of 2nd hand ones, but they are still pretty expensive. I bought my Paris based bike (1150GS, 2001, 40K Kms, bags, crash bar, heated grips) for 9,000 Euros.

Someone had to say it. Figures a Brit.
Her Mum ain't bad in fact.

Thanks Mike, That was just what I was thinking about.
A bike for the same price as mine or lower, and a ride through Europe as a bonus.
I reckon I'll freeze my arse off in January, but I ain't crying yet.

I don't know what the Irish 2nd hand market is like, but have to assume it's pretty dear?? (Irish contigent jump in here...)

I'd say Germany is going to be your best best, since the GS is the #1 bike there.

Just get a good vest and gloves and you'll be fine. I ride all year round....

Wouldn´t buy in Spain. Second hand they aren´t cheap and have probably been treated worse than Fanum thinks he´s treated your future mother in law. New they aren´t cheaper than Germany.

you can also try www.mobile.de, then go for the button on the LHS that looks like Motorrad Suck and then your on your own mate. From what I have seen you can get something really nice for €10k and even for quite a lot less if you are patient and a little lucky. The 1100 aren´t much cheaper than the 1150s. Alternative - buy an R100GS and you´ll fit in with any rural, tractor driving neighbours you might have.

Just remember to get the heated grips, super hard suspension for those super smooth Irish roads, hand made alu cases to maximise Guiness carry capability (see Vern) and one of those front fitting cow shit ploughs to allow you to go anywhere you want.

Sounds a good move though, Ireland is a top place and the people are really nice as you know.
