MacAfee subscription has just run out and they want 80 quid or there abouts to renew.
Not one virus detected in the last 12 months so don't want to renew. Also I found MacAfee slowed the pc down considerably.

Not wishing to be without some AV software, which is the best free one to go for. Previously tried AVG and Avast.

Which operating system?

Microsoft security essentials is as good as any and works properly with the OS. Bit defender would be my recommendation for a none MS product.

I use a combination of AVG, Malwarebytes and Ccleaner free editions.

There was a recent article on Virus Protection software, but I cannot remember where I read it though. But, of the free bits of software, they rated Sophos the highest. Indeed, it was only ranked just a little below the best bit of 'paid for' software.

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/test-cen...16-uk-free-summary-security-software-3263332/ is 3 days old - Avira is the best of the free versions, better than many costly ones.

Bitdefender gets a good review, as does the one I'm trialling - the Qihoo 360 which has the Bitdefender engine with some bells & whistles

Panda was good on an old netbook as it does not hog too many resources

I have just upgraded an old HP Laptop to Windows 10 and my Norto AV subscription also expired. W10 includes Windows Defender which from reading the windows blurb as it upgraded is a full AV package. Is this good enough or do I need to get avg or similar?

Windows Defender is okay but it is not 100% effective (few of them are) so maybe run Malwarebytes or an online scan every now and then.

I was using WD but I had a while when my notebook could not connect to the server to get an update so decided to give something else a go. I like the 360 suite mentioned above as it offers some useful extras over WD. WD has remained turned off for over 6 months now.

It's an annoying comment (sorry) but I went to Apple Mac in 2012 and have never looked back. If your PC is getting cranky the Mac is well worth the additional costs.
