I'm sure this has been discused already on this forum but here goes:

I'm based in Scotland and am planning a bike trip from alaska down to tip of South america this year and am wondering if its worth getting GPS, (I don't want to stick to the main routes really)-

If so, firstly which unit would be recomended (Garmin Quest is the only one i've really heard about but there seems to be a few different versions). I've been told by Garmin to get the European one as it has lager memory. I would use it here anyway on the bike and the car.

Secondly, mapping/software- When I emailed Garmin they only suggested the North America City Select map for the total bargain price of about £170 which seems a bit steep for something I'd only use for 6 months. I can't seem to find anything for Central & South America so am I missing something here?? Would the World Map cd be any use? Is there a re-sale value in these CD's?

Cheers

Mike

A Quest or decent hillwalking gps may be all you require. They have the ability to read in various transverse mercator grids that will be on the paper maps you may end up using. So you can use the GPS to tell you exactly where you are lost. You may find this link usefull. Good Luck :thumb

Hi,

Might have missed the boat now, but I am leaving for America in April this year. I have got the Garmin Navigator II which is great, a really good all round bit of software.

I now want to buy/install the North America part of the software but I am having difficulty getting some clarity on how to do it, Garmin are now saying that I have to buy the North America software as a stand alone software which is over $300, has anyone dealt with before or got any advice on simply adding this part of the software to Mapsource so I can then simply transfer it across to my GPS?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Regards

Robin

You have to buy a map license. There is no way around. But you don't really need the expensive City Navigator NA map.

Buying the City Select NA map is ceaper. 250$ including a 128 MB data card. Look for an Automotive Kit to 276C. Works fine with any Garmin.

Another alternative is an Auto Kit to the 60CS. Same stuff but without the 128 MB memory. Price 216$.
