Well the Autocom is on order and all I need now...until I think of something else to fit/spend my pennies on!!!!... is an MP3 player. So all you 'tourists' out there can you recommend anything in the £100 region?
Cheers

Sony NET MD, with these players you just load the CD into a PC or Laptop and save the audio tracks to Hard drive. Then you edit, name, sort and transfer them to the Mini Disc at a very fast rate. All htis happens at an amazing rate, saves hours of messing aound. Has remote control, bass boost etc.
£119 at Currys, Argos and Dixons at moment. I will send you the model number if you like. I went through two Sharp units....both Faulty. Sony perfect so far and so much beter then the Sharp ones I had.

Try a Sony MP3, I've got one you can have for £75.00 and comes with a 128meg memory stick. Great piece of kit and is as small as a fag lighter.

I'll try and attach an image.

I bought one of these off eBay because:

  • the price was right (about 60 quid)
  • it uses Compact Flash (as do most of my other toys)
  • 2 AAA batteries last 8 hours
  • It has big controls that I can use with a gloved hand

Sony net MD players go for 50+ hours on one AA and come with a rechargeable as well.

I have a house full of Sony product, but even the entry level MD player is more than twice as much as I paid for my MP3 player and it's got moving parts (albeit with a Jog buffer) - which is another reason why I bought the item I did.

If I wanted something to walk around with, I might go for one of these. But on the bike audio quality is not critical due to all the other noise sources and, given that it might get nicked/dropped/wet etc, low price was also quite important to me.

Msg for Phil...

Thanks for info and offer but I think I'll stick with the Smart media based player as I already have Fuji digital camera and it uses the same media......
Had a look around the recommendations and sites and boy is it confusing...
Thanks for advice/info guys.....

New Sony Minidisc

I actually have an unused Sony net MD 710 for sale ...cracking bit of kit, bought one after my cd walkman couldn't cope with the rough stuff. ended up with a duplicate.

Works really well with Autocom unit - and using the middle compression gives 2+ hours of music to a disc at good quality. I use the simpleburner software to copy CDs and the sony sonic stage for MP3s.

The best price new on the net I have found is £118 ..AJ Electronics

So I am asking £85 (inc p&p) - new unused boxed unit with all the extras. I will burn you a copy of simpleburner s/w as this does not come with the unit.

If someone coming along to the Peak District gathering on saturday at Hartington wants it, then I can deliver...or you can pick up - save a £5!!!

Advanced MP3 players as linked above are excellent - good prices and service.

My advice for anything MP3 related is dont buy anything with a hard drive in it. Whatever the manufactures claim THEY ALL SKIP COS THEY HAVE MOVING PARTS.

I have bought (and returned) supposedly anti-skip CD players and MP3 players with the highest level of claimed shock resistance and they simply dont work.

I use mine primarily for running and the gym and I bought a 256mb I River which is great quality and will hold about 4 hours of tunes which is enough for most workouts...

I bought one of these off eBay because:

Greg, pardon my ignorance, but what is it? A manufacturers name, or brand id or something. It looks good and chunky, which in comparison to a lot of mp3's I have seen is quite different.

John

not sure about via autocom, but my experience of the standard output through 'phones is that you need 10mw or more - anything less and I found it got drowned out in the gym or noisy environments (running by a road etc)

Have a looka the specs on www.advancedmp3players.co.uk

And then buy an I River....

Repoman

Ta, the only point of reference I've got is a Sony CD Walkman that needs to have the volume at 9/10 to hear it at around 70 mph without being deafened at a standstill. The don't deafen yourself through the headphones setting is about 3/10.

I'm guessing that the MP3 players will be drowned out by the wind noise without some external amplification.
