Might be an idea to have a test ride of both first. You will get every GS owner say get a GS and every GSA owner say get a GSA. Work out what you want i.e tank range, off road capability etc and decide from there.
After you have done that, go buy a GSA coz they are the best
GS = great Euro touring bike, needs petrol when you need a break, great handling and off road capability.
GSA = great Euro touring bike, you need a break before it needs petrol, slightly slower handling but still great, a bit taller/bigger/heavier and off road capability.
The 1200gs feels lighter and quicker handling than the Gsa. AS Bryn says you have to be tall enough for Gsa. Im 6ft 1 and Esa on two up with luggage setting leaves me 1 foot planted and other one on tiptoe. Offroad highest setting both tiptoes. When stopping I slide off to one side to get a foot planted . Also have the bulk to hold the bike and move it round when stationery. All that said two up and full luggage it feels completely planted up to autobahn speeds. Even when Julie is taking loads of photos
I like them both.
Try both allow half a day minimum for test ride.
I'm 5.8 with sgt seat fitted and my GSA fits me just fine with the preload at medium, as people say try both if you can. As per a previous post, if that's not possible get the GSA is my advice.
Both good bikes anyway so you're in a no lose situation, look for good history and beware corrosion at front of engine, not a drama but unsightly
Disagree completely. Almost the best part of the trip was sitting back having a fag and watching the filling station version of Whackey Races every hundred miles
Had both, loved both, have a hankering for another Adv, but would have no interest whatsoever in changing from the 800 to a 12GS..... in fact, would much rather have a new 800 and spend the difference in farkling and getting a much better bike than a standard 12 for less money
