I asked my dealer about Sat Nav for the R1200GS I'm about to take possession of and he quoted £1300 for the box and another "oner" to fit it (I assume £100 not £1000!!!). This seems like a hell of a lot of money to me.

Anyone fitted a non BMW Sat Nav, what was the cost and are you happy with it?

See the search thing above...

Loads of options:
2610,Quest,276,tomtom...

Pros and Cons to every model discussed at length. You can get a much better setup than the navigator (2610 in practice) for a lot less that 1100 squid.

2610 around £530, plus fitting. not rocket science.

And don't rule out a second hand Streetpilot 3 - they are bulkier and slower than the newer models, but they work fine and can be bought for around 200 quid if yer lucky.

Wait for the BMW Nav II Plus at the end of the month, I thing that's around £950 with all Europe on it.

276C

276C without doubt is the most powerfull unit Iv'e had, the display is like a PC monitor, its excellent, 3 times the size of a Quest 1.5 times the size of a 2610 and twice the resolution of a 2610.

Don't waste your time with the BMW version of the streetpilot, the dealer list is out of date anyway and even at the lower price its just a 2610 which can be had for a LOT less, the 276C is a horse of a different colour, it does loads more and the switches are much more tactile, 3000 way points 50 routes 50 savable tracks, proximity alerts on a portion of the waypoints, backlit switches when in night mode.

You need to see one before you make the mistake

Jimb,
I really liked the look of the 276c especially as the marine functions would be handy for me.

BUT I was a little put off by needing to buy CtySelect software and a memory card as well as other bits and pieces possibly. In other words it doesnt seem automotive ready.

Any views? What would my total start up for this be in the region of? Any any info on wiring it up would be useful.

Garmin Quest (£330) absoloutely brilliant and easily moved between vehicles.

Rich

It does both, its switchable between Marine & Automotrive, yes the memory cards are garmin only but a 256 card can be had for £90 these days.
The 276 C is supplied with the Atlantic basemap for road routing at 530 Euros and comes with a 9 way cable, marine mount, trip & waypoint manager software, mains charging adaptor, Li-Ion battery, and manuals, then you will need the Automotive kit 272 Euros this contains a 256 mb chip, Mapsource City Select V7 mapping with all regions unlocked, car beanbag mount, lighter socket power cable & speaker, and a couple of base stickers.

Total cost £534 shipped free, this gives you all the automotive capability, a 256 mb chip will hold all the UK on 150 Mb, the V7 mapping is far more detailed than my previous version.

If you want to use the marine mapping you need the Bluechart V7 marine maps which come with with one region unlock code, you choose the region, 155 euros, the unit will hold both land and marine data simultaneously and you can use both, the maps are loaded on the same chip so you can mix land and marine for the place your'e going.

The cable has bare wires at the end so you can configure what you need, there are no crappy jackplugs to get wet, i've just used the power and voice outputs but the device supports depth sounders, fish finders, Loran ETC on two data channels.

This is a very powerfull device and is not just plug & Play, but once configured for your use is much better than any other, the display is superb and some of the marine functions cross over to land, the proximity alarms is intended for hazards that are visible at low water and submerged at high but are also very handy for speed cameras, a proximity circle can be set so yopu get advance warning of your choice.

The photographers will like the celestial data that displays the bearing of the sunrise & sunset for any location on any date, Tide data is also handy but only fully functional with Bluechart software.

You need to see one.

I have it on a touratech bar mount just like any other GPS, the pedestrian feature is handy when your'e visiting places like Paris or Bruges, it will ignore one way streets so you can walk around freely, the battery lasts about 8 hours.

Thanks Jimb :thumb

Do you have a link for a supplier? Those prices are competitive.

After weighing up all options, I decided to go for the new BMW Nav II Plus (£975) on my new 1200, which although expensive, has a 2 Gb CF card with all of Europe pre-loaded on it. Of course you get the discs as well, but theoretically you might never need to use them...

I have to add though, that as my firm is paying for it, it was a no-brainer decision. Had I been paying myself, I would have undoubtedly gone for the 2610 which is still probably best value, if. like me you find the Quest screen too small.

Cheers

Roger

I've recently weighed up the options (for self purchase) and having weighed up pros and cons for the main two units (as i see it) i was overwhelmed by the Quest...

For a mere £360 including RAM mounting cradle and arms it's an absolute steal!!

functionality wise, it's every bit as good as 2610, smaller screen and no removeable memory (pre-installed memory instead) but on the positive, it's far more mobile/pocketable and the screen is more than good enough size wise. I've found it to be awesome.

You should go to the GPSINfo section of the forum and search for 2610/Quest and any others you may fancy... there is loads of info on all....

i'm sure you'll be more than happy with any, largely depends on your personal requirements and budget....

good luck....

Thanks SWebb (and everyone else who's posted a reply).

Where did you get your Quest package from?

:)

I will not purchase any GSM before trying the TomTom Rider, available this summer.
