In a couple of weeks or so SWMBO and I are going on a 5 week wander around Europe on a 1150GS. We've had to plan the first few days as we're travelling down to Slovenia with some friends who are on a trip with a club we belong to but thereafter the plan is to just to go where we fancy which will almost certainly include the Baltics, Greece, Italy, Spain and, if I can persuade SWMBO that the roads in Turkey aren't all bad (I've just printed the Turkey Trot thread for her), we'll have a wander there as well.

I'm new to GS ownership and have just bought a well looked after bike from Beemer so I'm struggling a bit as to what spares I need to take with me. I've had a look in the FAQ but can't see anything obvious. From the Turkey Trot thread it would appear I need a spare alternator belt but what other GS-specific parts should I take?

Oh, and if all else fails, is there a Garmin POI file of BM dealers in Europe anywhere? I've had a Google but have only found one for the US so far.

Thanks.

Kevin

well fishing through my left hand pannier I find:

Throttle Position Sensor
Hall sensors
Oil sight glass
brake pads ? not sure why they're in there!
Alt belt
plastic metal
Bottle of spare oil that's leaked
spark plug
clutch lever
Puncture repair kit and a tube (just in case)
clutch and throttle cables
fuse & bulb kit

But then again Europe is a reaonably civilised place where people ride motorcycles, hold down jobs and raise thier children just like we do. I'm kind of hoping to break down so I can meet some of them. I guess all you really need is a credit card and mobile phone.

Do a search on threads started by "Waldin" aka "Whatton" aka "Kevin" aka Guru. :D

Typical, found it at the first attempt. Click HERE. :thumb2

There are many threads in the same vein ( i suppose that makes them thread veins) of asking what to take as spares. I think mainly in the travel section.

If you were to take heed of all the advice you'd fill your panniers with parts and tools. How competent are you at working on your bike or diagnosing problems ? - if the answer is "not very" then i'd take nothing but a puncture kit and alternator belt.

Travling

Join RAC European cover or similar. only one serious prob and you'll save your membership fee.

I already have both RAC European and Carole Nash European cover, a mobile 'phone and a credit card. Puncture kit, gaffer tape, insulating tape, a bit of wire, spare fuses and bulbs are standard trip items for me (not that I've ever used a puncture kit nor have any idea how to!) so once I have the alternator belt it looks like I'm mostly sorted.

Thanks all.

Does Carol Nash cover accident recovery or just breakdowns?.

Recovery. I had a gearbox oil seal blow in France last November. As I was on the motorway system they couldn't come to me; it has to be dealt with by the Police. But once your off the system they can come and get you.

I called the Police, and they arranged for a local recover guy to come out to me. Meanwhile, an English truck driver turned up, and offered me a lift back to Dover, with bike, in his car transporter. I rang Carole Nash again and explained. They paid the French fella's call out fee, and when I got off the ferry in Dover, I called them again and they got me home.

I've head reason to query them since on the recovery, and I am assured that 'Recovery' is what it says, 'Recovery' is what it means. I queried it because I was told by Bennett's Insurance that RAC recovery reverts to 'to the nearest garage' in Europe. That's no good to me on a trip to Norrd Kap, so I stuck with Carole Nash.

Dave.

P.S. Helps to read the question properly, doesn't it?:blast Yes, it covers accident recovery as well, I am assured by them. You just have to pay the ferry fair, I believe.
