I've just bought the R1150GS and need a top box. Which is best Givi/Kappa, BMW or anything else ?

Depends what you want it for. If you want to look rufty tufty buy an alloy one, if you want to put two helmets in it buy a Givi Maxia 52.

I have a Givi E52.

The added advantage is the ability to add two high level brake lights to the box. There can be no excuse for car drivers saying they didn't know you were stopping.

And apart from holding two full-face helmets, you can get a lot of shopping (or cans of beer) in it!

Also depends if you wish to retain a grab rail when you take the box off- I have a Hepco and Becker Journey TC50 box from Motobins thsat retains the grab rail on the carrier and also takes two full face helmets with ease. It is also reasonably priced.

Thanks Guys.

The Givi seems to get the vote ! So its Ebay next.

E52 also doubles as a camping cool box

Kappa & Givi are made by the same firm. They use the same fixing system so if buying secondhand bear this in mind as you might be able to mix & match depending on what's available.

I've used Givi kit for 15 years and have been very happy with their stuff. I'm currently using a Monorack and E46 box on a 1150GS. The Monorack fits to the panier rails which spreads the load to the rear frame rather than taking it all on the grabrail subframe. I also keep the original grabrail. Of course, I can't use hard panniers as the rails are taken by the Monorack: I'm a big fan of throwover panniers anyway, as they make filtering easier and discourage you from taking too much non-essential bollocks on holiday...
