Which trailie should I be looking for

Its not really a focus on power.

I am having to ride the dommie harder than I would like... I don't like redlining my bikes so I want a bit more power.

I would also like a bit more extra weight as it makes me feel more planted.

You'll thrash a Transalp too then. Personally I have no issue with doing this to the GS or the Transalp as they thrive off a bit of abuse.

You could always change the gearing.

Are you off roading it, because if you're not then an old triumph tiger would fit the bill. If you are off roading then you have to decide at what level you are prepared to sacrifice your road/off road ability. The GS is as planted as you'll get on road with a 21" front wheel. The smaller the front wheel the worse off road.

All trailie bikes have to be thrashed on road unless you are prepared to fork out on the newer big stuff (KTM 990 SE etc).

The Dommie does have a top speed of around 100mph like the Dak, the Transalp has another wheel weaving 10mph if your brave.

You could always look for a twistier route to your destination :nenau If you're already travelling the back lanes at full chat, then you might be better with a bandit 600 and a cheap trailie for green laning?????

Its twistie enough round here already. I am no racer just when I am going for it , it leaves me a bit short.

Not really off roading, just tracks. A tiger might be good

one tooth bigger on the g'box sprocket should do it.

cheapest way to raise the redline :)

its got plenty of poke - its the gearing thats wrong :thumb

thats what i did for mine - i can't see how you can be redlining it then - mine hits 140klm in top easily

Nud1es R80GS. :thumb2
i know the ...."terrain" you are riding.

a tiger... :nenau in theory, maybe the one to go for - i nearly got one / put off by a number of aspects, particularly the importer here. but that can be worked around.
transalp. no. it'll piss you off too soon.
650 V strom / KLV - not bad, anyone i know that has one is happy - but their expectations and use aren't as..."focussed" as yours (if this one dimensional screen "vibe" of you is of any value :D )

in the end i opted for an R100GS.
it does all i want it to.
heart, wallet and brain all agree. seriously. no pisstake / all joking aside -
get an airhead.

just my 2 cents though.
Good Luck - oh, if you pin it down to a particular make / model - let me know, coz i hear of a lot up here in Dubland. - may be able to find you a good un.

Transalps are always discounted on power, boring, bla, bla. But if you can go a bike, on twisty or country roads you can match anyone, thrashing it will do no harm as the engine is'nt sceaming.Keeping it on the boil above 80mph is half the fun.In a word-BOMBPROOF. good luck whatever you decide on:thumb2

Nah, what you want is a Yamaha TDM 900. 86bhp, twin with an odd angle so it feels like a v-twin, BRILLIANT round the bends and terrific at everything. THIS is THE best bike in the world.

You'd easily get a 900 for 2kish and in good nick too!

Thats what to go for.:)

I have always liked the Vara, it would obviously be a second best to a GS...

A very close second and only in a few areas :thumb2

I would tell you all about it but then you'd only go and get one :D

What year did they start the six speed box, and maybe bigger tank... Don't really need six speed here but if it is also a bigger tank that would be good. I don't like stopping to fill up...

Went out for a blast this afternoon, the dommie is actually fairly good around here... Motomartins idea of upping the front cog is a good one:thumb

Rode a TDM 850 once, not mightily impressed then but maybe now...

Did they change the engine at the 900 stage to make it feel like a vtwin. I remember the TRX 850 was always that way

Mk1 tdm was just your common parra twin, as were the first of the mk2's then the angle was changed and kept for the 900. 900 is fuel injected, and is truly a great bike - ive had 2 and unless my gs starts behaving, thats exactly where my money will be heading back to.

Have a shot of one if you can, you'll like. 04 900 on are your best bet as subtle improvements were made since 02.

I believe that 2003 was the change over from the 'Carbedero' to the FI version with 6-speed box etc... The later FI version offers better mpg - I tend to get 40-45 mpg on my commute. As far as I know they all have 25 litre tanks.

Don't get one :augie

Are we still talking TDM's here ?
If so, any reasons for the don't get one reply ?

I part-ex'd my GS for a Varadero but I say don't get one because I like not being part of a crowd :D
