After the warranty has expired, why continue to pay huge servicing prices of the BMW dealers? Is the BMW

Well not to me. I do it all mself (or together with a very handy friend that is). Waste of money imho.
If I were buying an older 11** I don't think I would be too concerned as to whether it had a FSH or not..I'd go by what it looked/sounded like, the bikes are fairley low tech so can get by without all the dealer palarver.
I do all my own maintainance and like knowing exactly what's been done.

all the work done on thumper is done by rocky (my other half also known as jase)
he does all the work on his 1100 as well, useful being married to a mechanic
i am not sure that being married to an archaeologist is as useful to him though lol
