Why didn't I read the Instructions first?

I have purchased a Garmin 60Csx and decided to connect it to my Windows 2000 PC without reading the instructions first.
The instructions actually say that you must install the Trip and Waypoint manager first, as this installs the necessary drivers for the unit. But it's too late now:o
Now when I connect the 60Csx to the PC, the PC goes through the 'Found New Hardware' routine, but then stops and displays the error message
"An error has occured during the installation of this device"
"The system cannot find the file specified"
but it does not give the name of the file it cannot find.

I've tried un-installing and re-installing the Trip & Waypoint Manager software, but still get the same problems.
Any ideas.
PS. E-mailed garmin support but still waiting for a reply.

Go to the control panel ( Start>Control panel>system>hardware>device manager) and see if the gps is listed there....chances are it may be one of the items with a red question mark against it.

If it's there, uninstall it, re-boot with the device disconnected then try again in the order the instructions say.

I'm not familiar with w2000 but that would work in many versions of windows.....

If I go to the device manager with the unit disconnected, no Garmin devices appear in the list of Hardware.

what you using.............xp?
just remove the program and then follow the instructions.........if you can't remove all the program then go to system restore and go to a prior date...then start again............good luck...

The clue's in the 'Windows 2000pc' Janie ;)

The programme wasn't been installed before the device..that's the reason it's not working.

The PC has seen (and applied) the best guess drivers it has for the device it saw, which aren't right......

Admiral, you need to find the device in the control panel and remove the drivers for it (or update to the ones in the software or on the disc)

It'll be there somewhere ;)

he will have to go into hardware, then device manager and work it from that side...........if there is any problems it will show as a yellow question mark....then he could try to re install the drivers for it.........:o

How about boot with problem device attached. Into Control Panel, System, Device Manager, select item and uninstall, I think that it is named "remove" in Win2K.

When the OS has finished removing the device from the registry, shut down disconnect the device and reboot.

Install software etc per instructions.

If the above doesn't work, boot with the device disconnected, ensure that you have everything backed up and a recent restore point set. Select Start from the bottom left of screen, Run "regedit".

At the top of the screen click on My Computer then edit, find and type in the name of the device as displayed on device manager. Delete each entry found.

BE WARNED< MESS THIS UP AND THE COMPUTER WONT RUN

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm at work at the moment so cannot try the suggestions just yet, however I have spoken to Garmin Support over the phone. They directed me to the support website where I downloaded an .exe file which they say will install all of the correct drivers in the correct place. So I will try that when I get home.

As for the suuggestions about using the device manager.
If the unit is disconnected, no Garmin devices appear in the list.
When I connect the device, the hardware install routine goes into a loop, constantly trying to install the new hardware, but each time failing with the error message "cannot find the file specified". Whilst this is going on, if I go into the windows 2000 device manager there is a Garmin Device with a yellow question mark. I tried updating and re-installing the drivers at this point, but just get the same error message.

Thanks agin

Try Garmin's suggestion first.

If the problem persists, connect the device and repeatedly Cancel the "adding new hardware" popups until it gets the message. It should, eventually.

Then go into Device Manager and remove the device drivers. Don't attempt to reinstall or update the drivers, just focus on REMOVING the drivers while the hardware is attached. Don't go into Device Manager while the add new hardware wizard is still messing about, unless after a vast number (more than 20 or so) of repetitions it's still going.

Then unplug it, reboot if you want, install the software and proceed as per the instructions.

I have removed all the software etc. and re-installed it.
This time I have left the 'Garmin gstart' software running. Previously I had stopped it from running as I do not like having lots of software running when it's not in use, however it appears it is crucial!
Now, with gstart running, the PC and Garmin 60Csx talk to each :)
However, the 'Found New Hardware' popup just keeps looping and giving the same error message as before. It's annoying but at least I can plan routes etc. It just means that I have a "Found New Hardware" popup on the screen, but I can move it out of the way.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Chris
