Help please, I am running a real old system (just for internet, Win 98se) and had problems with Mcafee antivirus updating itself. Tried the helpline who went through deleting lots of temp files etc. Reloaded Mcafee, it now works, but the computor is extreamly slow (even when not connected to the net) It also will not perform scancheck etc. It will start to run this, but then just loops itself (a few bars on the progress come up, then reset and so on) and after 10 attempts states that Windows is still writing to the c-drive, please shut down as many running programs as possible). Same applys-ish to defrag. I have obviously deleted something important but any ideas what and how to get it back again?

Start your PC in "Safe mode" (keep pressing F5 and/or F8 as it boots up), then select Safe Mode. Run your Scandisk check then run the defrag. Safe mode loads only the bare essentials to run Windows, but even so, you may have to re-start the scan or defrag a few times before it completes either task. Then, I would download Swatit which is a free download for a specific Trojan and Worm scanner then update and run it. Let us know how you get on.

Turn off the screen-saver before defragging. It makes it go back to the start every time it fires up.

McCafe is trying to scan everything that's moving.

Turn off local scanning and only set for incoming files via email and t'internet

Better still - junk it and get AVG ( grisoft ) :thumb

Thanks guys, took longdogs advise and got the scandisk and defrag to work just fine in safe mode. I have a spyware programme, which found a couple of trojans and killed them. It was still slow so then took motomartins advise and removed mcafee. Speed was then restored, so I downloaded NTL'S free virus scan. This has slowed it up a little, but not as bad as mcafee. Still cannot access scandisk or defrag unless I use safe mode. Still, it seems to all be ok (for an old system) at the mo. Thanks to all.(and yes, I did forget to disable the screen saver at first).
