Why have a sat nav ‘n who needs one?

The OP uses a loadstone and observes Venus relative to the Moon :D :beerjug:

I'll have you know, I use a canvas bucket on a lanyard and pipe it aboard full of water. I then look to the west and dip my finger in the bucket of water, gently taste it and can then pinpoint where on the chart we are.

For a long time and even into GPS days, I used one of these or something pretty similar:

I remember it:

A. Had little toggles, so I could pull the strings tight.

B. Went a brownish sort of colour, the plastic reacting eventually to the sun.

Happy days.

I am thinking of giving up using a tank bank on my Himalayan, so I may well go back to using one.. Thanks for the reminder, JB.

I still have a good one, if you want it. :thumby:

The chart plotter is running, but all planning and navigation is done on the chart table with charts, the old fashioned way. A weather eye is kept on the chart plotter and a waypoint dropped every 30 minutes, (except when I am not on watch and the owner/crew either can't be bothered or forgot, hence the large gaps) when a new 'dead reckoning' position is put on the chart too - it is still a maritime legal requirement, believe it or not.

See, now I am also useless at sat nav, ok just putting a destination in, but would be even worse trying to plot and navigate at sea, you have more skills than you realise.

Had a message on the Nav yesterday that installed maps not updated for over a year. To be honest, doing an update I find more scary that finding my way through any third world city. :ROFLMAO:

When I said earlier sat-nav is the work of the devil, this is one of the reasons.
Foolishly(?) I clicked on update the other day for my Garmin xt2. All Europe maps lost. Only Middle East remaining, tbh, did not even know they were on. Only took around 4 hours to sort. Downloading Garmin express ( what a strange name, more like Garmin stop, bugger everything up, and refuse to work would be more apt) again, finding connecters for the Garmin USB (so bang up to date!!)
Oh well, that is why I got it two months in advance..
